Eyes on the road...

.

I thought this was a pretty good idea.

VW produces eerie, interactive anti-texting PSA

Clever way to get the point across. But...

"Mobile use is now the leading cause of death behind the wheel."

Uh-huh. Sure it is...

I would go for totally oblivious to their responsibility as a licensed driver. Had one pass me, on my bike making a left turn 100 feet from my driveway, in a old GM car with 30 day tags in a residential area.

2011 data, NHTSA reports a total of ~33,000 traffic fatalities.
Of that, 3300 are caused by "distracted driving".
Of that, only 12% were distracted by cell phones.
Yes, NHTSA reports show that 385 fatalities were caused by cell phone use in 2011.

That's 1% of traffic fatalities in the US.

1%.

Texting while driving is a bad idea. But it's hardly the epidemic it's claimed to be. And if you look at injuries, it's about the same (2.2million injuries, 21000 from texting. Less than 1%).

Maybe we just have a drastic decline in non texting related teenage deaths making it a much higher percentage of the total? :P

Why do corporations spend money on PSA's?

Have PSA's ever persuaded anyone to improve their behaviour? Or are they just a sop to show how much corporations and government supposedly care about everyone? Or is it just a way to generate a tax write off or a subsidy?

Follow the money...
