F150 ecoboost, anybody?

I keep hearing that it gets over 30 mpg and people can get over 600 miles per tank. It is less aerodynamic than my corolla, much heavier, less aerodynamic, how would that be possible? Any of you guys drove one?

From what I have heard from other owners, expect the same mileage as the v8 version.

Edit: if you look at fuelly, the v8 actually gets better mileage.

My van (almost identical dimensions to a Ford E Series) is all those things too, and gets 35mpg, 95% city, 700+miles/ tank.

No reason a big vehicle can't get great economy. I love pulling up next to small cars and thinking I get better economy than them.

A quick look on fuelly shows that the 2.7 turbo appears to be the best as far as fuel economy is concerned. I thought I looked before and saw the non turbo 3.5 got better real world mileage. The mpg number that the largest number of people were getting with the 2.7 is 19. With the 3.5 non turbo it was 17. If I was getting one of these things I really would have a hard time picking between the 2.7 and the non turbo 3.5.

But ford makes my decision easy, no manuals offered. And anyways, the only pickup truck I would drive is one of these:

Don't look at the mean, look at the peak. I find my cars usually score in the top 1%.

Technically I was looking at the mode.

I have a very hard time trusting people on fuelly whose numbers are higher, or lower than normal. I imagine most people fill up using their phone and fuelly's text feature, well that leads to a lot of mistakes. I ALWAYS input my fillups with a computer. Fuelly also has a partial fill up feature which I have yet to see work correctly, so we get people having a tank that "got" several hundred mpg, or more mysteriously someone whose lifetime mpg is single digits when they have never had a fill up with less than 25 mpg.

Yes, you then have to go in and verify that it's not garbage-in garbage-out, but indeed legitimate data. Still all part of your due diligence when considering buying a vehicle.

Since my interest is more in Euro vehicles, I use spritmonitor.de, and use the top 5 vehicles as my guide.

I agree, fuelly should have some kind of matrix to throw out obviously bad fill ups. You can have somebody with lots of tanks, maybe some pretty good actually, then you look closely and see a few more 200mpg tanks thrown in to the average as well. It doesn't take many 200 mpg tanks to make a pickup look pretty good on average LOL

If you look at the average MPG for each vehicle, they don't count the outliers.

jcp123 03-12-2018 09:28 PM

Yeah, fuelly rarely counts me.

Anyhow, Ecoboost works if you're willing to work with it. This isn't a totally apples to apples comparison, but my company rented me a Ford Escape with a 2.0l EB a couple of years back. I did nothing but inflate the tires a bit and set the cruise at a conservative but not slow speed from Dallas to Memphis, and it returned, IIRC, 36mpg. Dip into that turbo boost and you definitely pay for it, but otherwise you'll see the benefit.
