Finally a Toyota Hybrid you'll actually want to own.

Is it just me or is this the first time we've seen a hybrid drive train swapped into another body?

There were rumors about the GT86 getting a hybrid variant.

I don't recall any hybrid swaps in a classic car. But it seems like there were a few swapped into newer car bodies.

A hybrid variant of the GT86 sounds very likely. But would be nice if it had a real gearbox, basically like a scaled-down version of the setup used in some Hino hybrid trucks fitted with an AMT with the electric motor between the transmission and the ICE instead of a clutch.

There was at least one Lincoln Continental from the 60's converted into serial hybrid.

Oh hey what's up, haven't seen you online in a while :)

I highly doubt that. I bought an FRS and there's no space to sandwich an electric motor between the transmission and the engine. They could go belt driven alternator-motor but that idea seems extremely unpopular among car makers for whatever reason.

The one thing is, the car could damn well use a mild hybrid setup as below 2000rpm the engine struggles a bit.

Really? Not even a small one placed instead of a torque converter in a setup similar to the one used in the BMW ActiveHybrid7? At least the HSD setup is also viable in a front-engine rear-wheel drive layout as it's already proven in the Lexus LS and IS, so there would be at least one last-resource option for Toyota if they were really going to make a hybrid version of the 86.

IIRC there was a version of the Toyota Crown fitted with the BAS-Hybrid setup.
