It's not just the bellmouthed intake and revised vane system, they extended the underlap to the cylinder shrouds.
More air in, more air out. Improved 37% with an OEM oil cooler, 42% with an external cooler.

Cool! But is it a pain to mate up to the other shrouds? Does a stock air cleaner fit with this shroud?

Same form factor as the OEM shroud except the bellmouth on the back side. Other differences are internal.

But aftermarket shrouds and tins are notorious for fitment issues.
The original shroud had a notch in the top for the width of the OEM air cleaner.

That's a later shroud.
thesamba: Cooling fan evolution 1200 through 1600 late.
The fans got thicker, with more fins. So the shroud was thicker too. I believe the Supershroud is supposed to use a later fan in the early hemicircular shape. The bellmouth provides the depth needed.
They extended the underlap to the cylinder shrouds, that should help with fitment.

How much more power-hp does it "suck up" to get that extra cooling? When you need all 50, even loosing 2 or 3 is noticable. Loosing some of the 36 would be horrific.
Otoh, on a hot day in Bakersfield headed towards Tehachapi or LA on the freeway hills, you don't have too much cooling, ever.

Good point.
A blower or vacuum cleaner pulls the fewest watts when the air duct is clogged and air can't get through. The more open it is the more power they draw.

On second thought, any loss in energy would be null if the thermostat flaps where closed. So maybe having a thermostat and a really good shroud and fan do make sense.
