I can't find a pic, but back the day (as they say) quarter-mile racers used two squirrel cage electric fans.
Electric fans are a popular ecomodification.

I thought of doing that when I had mine. But on The Samba there were a lot that said you'd need a 10hp electric motor to get enough air.

Back in the day..... everyone serious had a fan of some sort in the pits for cooling their engines, provided there was power in the pit, or they had enough $$ for fueled fans. I don't recall leaf blowers being used.
As a non-pro, just getting a space to park near the track was a massive upgrade, but the fastest I ever ran was 14.03 so a pit slot was the holy grail.
Since the thermostats tended to hang, I don't know anyone with a VW that had them still installed. Muir recommended throwing them away since overcooling wasn't hazardous and the cold bog was fixed by squirting more fuel

They might be exagerating. I doubt those dual-fan setups fitted to those mid-size cars and minivans of the '90s had 5hp on each of the electric motors of the fan assembly, yet they've been already successfully adapted even into trucks.

Yes, I believe it to be an exaggeration as well. How could that little fan belt even deliver 10 hp, as the discussion i was in was about how any fan, including the VW fan, was going to sap that much power at full RPMs.

A 5hp rated fan would be massive, the Squirrel cage fans I see are typically rated under 1/2 hp OR 350 watts +/-. Heater fan I salvaged from my oil fired house heater is 1/2 hp with a 3 to 1 gearing. 2ft square exit. Maybe 1600 cfm which would be an air exchange in my house every 45 seconds. I believe it would cool a stock 1600 most of the time, but not all the way from Sacramento on a hot day. Everyone I knew stopped in Truckee for a fuel, gas, cooling, pit stop lunch break when we all drove VW's even the guys that had desert tin because the engine was trying to heat refine the engine oil. 50 wt poured like water

The Buick LaCrosse/Impala eAssist altermotor have a toothed serpentine belt for their 15HP bi-directional power transmission.

Just A Car Guy again:
A VW Bug woody wagon
Wood doors instead of skinned metal ones, but the B and C pillars could be curved like the Ford in the background.

Apparently you aren't floating about as advertised in the evening news.
