First 70 MPG trip (3.4 L/100 km) in the Mirage 1.2L, 5-speed

70 MPG (US) = 3.4 L/100 km indicated

This was for a 79 km / 49 mile one-way trip.

Conditions were decent: mild (3C / 37F), with dry roads. The key element was a 15 km/h / 9 mph quartering tail wind. I've seen multiple trips in the low to mid-60's this (mild) winter, but this was the one I've been waiting for.

Route details: max posted limit of 80 km/h / 50 mph, passing through 3 towns. Average speed of 37 mph (includes multiple stop signs/red lights), max speed of 98 km/h / 60 mph (downhill - ha!).

Driving style: driving with load within a couple of km the speed limit on the open road, EOC down a few of the steeper hills and approaching stops & turns.

This is not 70 "actual" MPG - the display was 3-4% optimistic on the last couple of fill-ups compared to pump calculations.

But it's still fun to see!

Next up: 70 MPG round trip... then a "real" 70 MPG trip (that'd be 72.8 indicated)... 75! All of which will require much warmer weather.

Hmmm... should also post this here:

Wow congratulations! Even if it isn't a "real" result it is still very impressive.

Love the mods you have done to your car, definitely looks like an Ecomachine.

You saying it's a "fake" result remindes me of one time on a drive back from Eastern Oregon. I stopped near the top of a mountain range for a viewpoint. I restarted my engine, continued on my way and didn't think much of it. Pretty soon I realized that the vast majority of the past 15 or 20 minutes of driving was downhill. Looked down at my ultragauge and its auto-resetting trip meter and saw that I was averaging almost 700 miles per gallon.

That was MY truly "fake" result, though I must say the remainder of the trip still ended up being 50 miles per gallon.

Anyway, great job. I look forward to your inevitable "real" 70 MPG post!

MetroMPG 03-06-2020 12:11 PM

Haha! That would have made a great "success stories" picture!

cowmeat 03-06-2020 12:41 PM

Nice one!

I could barely keep my G1 Insights over 70 mpg . . . . I wonder what you could do in my Volt?

MetroMPG 03-06-2020 12:45 PM

Completely different driving environment, I suspect. (I\'ve driven a bit around your neck of the woods - lots more traffic... and your on-ramps are ridiculously short! :D )

I'm going to be in your neighbourhood again for a few days in April (Zephyrhills), maybe you could show me your Volt!

cowmeat 03-06-2020 02:20 PM

Sure man, stop in and check it out, I'm about fifteen minutes from there.

You'll probably want one after you drive it though

MetroMPG 03-06-2020 02:43 PM

Oh, I already know that I want one.

I love driving my friends' Prius Prime.

You may have to update your “Latest Mods” link in your signature. We need more details about the Mirage.

MetroMPG 03-10-2020 10:11 AM

Yes, thank you. My sig is ridiculously outdated - that Civic test was 4 (four) winter beaters ago!

Is that how time is measured in Canada? :D

MetroMPG 03-10-2020 01:55 PM

In my world it is.

That's only 3 Northern NY winter beaters at the current exchange rate.

Car’s have such a different life depending on where they live. I am on the West coast and we do not use road salt. My 2002 Saturn L200 has 230,000 miles on it and will see 1/4 million miles this year. My 2006 Lincoln Navigator is very close to 200,000 miles and I have no plans to ever replace either vehicle. I did replace the rear hatch on the Lincoln because the paint started to bubble around the license plate. The hatch is aluminum and I am sure it was a test for the new aluminum Ford trucks.

There are still Geo Metros here. They have 250,000 miles on them but they still have frame horns.

Very nice, but not stunning, I think. I could reach almost the same amount with a 2009 Fiat Panda with an old 60 hp - 1,2 - four cylinder engine ("fire engine") in it.

cr45 07-14-2020 05:56 AM

The fleet average fuel consumption for the Fiat Panda is quite a bit higher than for the 1.2 Mitsubishi Mirage.

https://www.spritmonitor.de/en/overv...10&powerunit=2

https://www.spritmonitor.de/en/overv...=1&powerunit=2

From Spritmonitor

Mirage 5.1 l/100 km average
Panda 6.28 l/ 100 km average

Hence on average the Fiat Panda consumes 23 % more fuel than the Mitsubishi Mirage.

From an environmental point of view, this is what really matters!

MetroMPG 07-14-2020 09:00 AM

Welcome to the forum, Silent Blood!

I agree - it's a decent but not a stunning result for the 1.2L Mirage, considering the late winter temperatures, non-LRR winter tires and basic eco-driving.

I'm sure the car is capable of 80+ MPG US / 2.9 L/100 km using more extreme techniques in milder weather conditions.

I'm looking forward to reading your fuel economy adventures with your old BMW 523!

Only 38 entrys on the Fiat, but 226 on the Mitsubishi?

I drove this car on france, very cozy from coast to coast, with about 80 km/h (50 mph). After a long road (don´t know the exact lenght anymore, but it was a few hours) he computer shows an average consumption of 3,7 l / 100 km (63,6 mpg). I have to mention, that it was the "Eco" - version with long 5. gear (100 km/h = 2600 U/min.). Can´t filter it out on "spritmonitor".

MetroMPG 07-14-2020 01:42 PM

Nice. I wish the Mirage had an eco version.

(Well it used to offer a 1.0L in some markets. But never here.)

Many North American owners complain that top gear is too short for good freeway economy. The Euro version has slightly more efficient gearing from the factory.

You have quoted the data incorrectly!

It is a sample size of 226 Fiat Pandas and 38 Mitsubishi Mirages.

Here is the Panda "ECO" data.

The average fuel consumption has improved slightly.

6.18 l/100 km

Xist 07-14-2020 09:56 PM

Can you swap the 1.0 into a Mirage?! :)

MetroMPG 07-14-2020 10:35 PM

All that's required is time and money!

You´re right! But it doesn´t change anything. To be informative, the number of the cars in comparism should be at least similar, to compensate deviations.

The numbers do not need to be equivalent!

They just need to be greater than a certain threshold.

30 or more provides good data.

Here is the Mirage for years 2013 to 2019.

There are now 97 cars in the sample.

The average fuel consumption is now 5.2 l/ 100 km as opposed to 5.1.

There is a caveat here though because the Mirage had a model refresh in 2017 and the aero was not as good as the earlier cars.

https://www.spritmonitor.de/en/overv...=1&powerunit=2

Here is the data for the 1.0 for years 2013 to 2015.

The average fuel consumption is 4.83 l/100 km compared with 5.1 l/100km for the 1.2. This is 5% less fuel consumed per 100 km.

This is actually the 2nd most efficient non hybrid car that I have been able to find on Sprit.

The Mirage 1.2 is the most efficient non hybrid 1.2 or greater car.

If somebody driving not economical, a bigger number of cars will be compensate it. Same, if somebody is too stupid, to note the consumption properly, which is questionable spread. Just compare different cars with identical construction ("badge - engineering"), you will see.
