Ford accidentally releases 2019 Ranger

.

https://www.autoblog.com/amp/2018/08...-configurator/

Ford said it "accidentally" released its configurator for the 2019 Ranger ahead of the "official" release.'

Anyway, the base price starts at $24,000 and a equipped Lariat for $42,070.

Comes standard with a 2.3L EcoBoost 4 cyl. engine with Auto Stop Start Technology that is backed by a 10-speed automatic.

Screen shots are available at the above link. Ford has since removed the official release.

It seems the days of a inexpensive pickup truck are long gone...

Even though I'm sure Americans would demand something with more guts than the naturally-aspirated 2.5L fitted to the overseas model, plus I don't remember if this engine is available with automatic transmission anywhere but in Australia, it's quite surprising that a turbocharged engine will be the standard.

I guess the lack of an inexpensive work truck could only be reverted if cab-forward Asian compact trucks (not the Kei ones) such as the Hyundai Porter were road-legal there, but that's a whole different matter. Anyway, I wonder if Ford will ever offer a regular-cab Ranger there in the U.S., as it didn't feature such option in Brazil for a while after the facelift (even though it resumed offering this option only in 4WD and with the 2.2L turbodiesel).

Still too big.

$42K...for a 1/4 ton small pickup?

LOL.

By today's exchange rate, a 4WD 2.2L turbodiesel AT goes just a little more expensive.

You can option out a Ram to be over $100,000. I understand something fully modern is going to be more expensive than what they were building 10-20 years ago, but that Ram is a good $50,000 more than the nicest Ram that could be had 14 years ago when my truck was new. Then again Chrysler did go bankrupt selling just $50,000 Rams LOL!

$30,680 for the most basic XL but with 4wd and crew cab. I bet most are the XLT version of that truck for $34,115. My brother in 2015 bought a brand new F150 with quite a few more options (leather, 3.5 ecoboost, ect, just short of a Lariat) for $34,000. The Lariat Ranger 4x4 crew is $38,385. My brother's MSRP was $44,000. If they do $8-10k off similarly on the Ranger it would be worth considering, but at MSRP I think I'd rather just have a F150.

Saving up for the Lariat.

I wouldn't place any bet on its sales performance, but I still believe many folks would still prefer a naturally-aspirated V6 over the 4-cyl Ecoboost. But anyway, I would expect the same naturally-aspirated 2.5L 4-cyl available nearly everywhere else to also be offered stateside.

It's a bit much. A fleet model with a basic four and stick/auto should be the price floor. There's probably a fair number of good income earners who might keep a cheap pickup at home, the way so many have done with Tacomas and previous Rangers for so long. Heck, even I'd tickle an $18k regular cab, simple four-banger stick Ranger if it came around. Oooh, or a regular cab, stick, shortbed stripper model with a 1.0 or 1.6 ecoboost. Or diesel? So many ideas, and so little seeming willingness from Ford.

Maybe a pickup Transit Connect or Ram Promaster might be a better concept for light-duty, household pickup work? Or a good wagon...
