Ford factory mod: start/stop to be available in North America in 2012

Detroit Free Press is reporting today that Ford is planning to make the start/stop option available on "many" of its vehicles starting in 2012.

Quote:

Ford estimates that its system improves fuel economy by 4% to 10%, depending on driving conditions.
Still unclear whether it'll be standard or an option.

Also, it's unclear if/how the EPA will treat start/stop systems because apparently the current fuel economy testing doesn't recognize the real world benefit of start/stop since there are relatively few stops in the cycles.

I know it's just a joke, but it has been interesting to see how many mods the OEM's are introducing that we've been modding into our cars (or doing as a driving technique, like start/stop) for years.

Eventually maybe just the old cars will still be ecomoddable. :)

Nah, probably not.

As mass produce cars are for the masses. There will still be FE tweaks for individuals and applications.

Naah, not until the OEMs start offering factory aero done in coroplast, duct tape and cardboard!
