FOUND: 1997 Geo Metro Hatchback - $2000
 

Ok, so I need some advice on this to see if it's worth even investigating further.

I found a 1997 Geo Metro hatchback (pictures attached) for sale nearby for $2000. My question is, is it worth investigating at that price judging from the picture below.

The ad says that it's an Automatic (:mad:) and that it has 160K on it. How much will the auto tranny cost me in average fuel consumption / how annoying will it make FE driving / how easy is it to swap for a manual. And how long do these things usually run for, is 160K considering near the end of the life for a metro?

It's probably good for the 40-45 mpg range in nice weather. Remember: 3 speed, so it'll be bad on the freeway.

My advice: wait for something else with a manual transmission.

Also - have you done the math to figure out how much you'd actually save by buying a beater?

EDIT: the cars are reliable. The mileage wouldn't scare me off, but it all depends on whether it was looked after.

wait for a manual...for 2k you could get a quality honda or toyota.

I actually would break even, if not make some money off the Metro. I would sell the Camry to pay for the metro if I got it and The bluebook for my car is $3000 so, it's been in one accident, I figure I can still get at LEAST $2k for it.

Just reading about your inquiry of the Geo Metro........I drive a 95 Geo Hatchback.......
it has 338,000 kms on it and going strong. The cars are small, but mileage is great.....and the hatchback makes the best moving van of all. My automatic is manual steering........has no added options........If I have to buy another car...........only a Geo will do.........I worked in a GM dealership service.......the only time we saw Geo's were for oil changes..........can't say the same about a lot of other vehicles.

You need a Lot of parts to switch to manual. I'd keep shopping. At that mileage, it might need a valve job, which is very easy. About the only thing that kills these cars is rusted out suspension mounts. Maybe shop on one of the Metro fix-it lists - it is a good time to buy.

I'm looking as well, and there are plenty of metros for sale in this neck of the woods - manual even. I'm looking to pay no more than 1000, and I know I'll eventually be able to get away with it if I keep looking. That's just what they cost up here. Take a look at crazedlist dot org and add any areas you'd be willing to drive to. That should get you at least a couple noteworthy metros.
