1993 Ford Escort Wagon Aeromods

I am just beginning to aeromod this older (1993) wagon - it is the car which I have, and I wonder just what can be done with it.

I have removed roof rack, front air partial block, partial KAMMback (see pics), w/w dressing (partial remove) - with good results so far.

As the car is vintage '93, scanguage is not an option - vacuum gauge is my next objective.

Currently enjoying around 40mpg, goal of 50.

Escort

Shooting from the hip I'd say the angles on the hatch Kammback are too fast.Go to the Search EcoModder tool at the top of the page and type in Project:making a permanent Metro Kammback extension.-------- That will bring up what Darin has done.On page 2 of that thread you'll find a aerodynamic template you can model your Escort's from.We believe that if you follow the instructions you'll have attached flow for the full length of whatever you build and gas savings to prove it.Check it out. You're on the right path.

As Aerohead mentioned, the Kammback angle is way too steep.

My dad had one of these cars. I always tried to convince him to ditch the roof rack.

I would think about a full bellypan and wheel spoilers for you car. My dads car had a tendency to overheat, despite being stock, so watch those temperatures carefully when you block the grille !

You don't need a ScanGuage for you car. You can use a SuperMID.

Or an MPGuino.

Thanks, All.

The Kamm was a first attempt, and done before I even started using the airflow tool, which agrees with your assessment.

I did however notice a 10% immediate gain in FE, and was reluctant to remove the existing first gen KAMM. (3 MPG with no other changes - perhaps masked by weather change - must A-B-A test, am making gen 2 KAMM to be removable, 2nd gen will follow your suggestions)

In the 'Kammback for Geo' the author (MetroMPG) suggests 12`-15` as the max angle of attack to avoid flow separation before termination, I will go for this next and report back.

I am jumping to the other end of the car, and have made a radiator box to force air flow through the radiator, and have been able to block most of the air intake ports on the front, with no over heating, and next will make ducting to direct waste air down into the back of engine compartment, behind the bow pan turbulent zone. Initial numbers look good, but I will, again, report after next gas tank (2 weeks or so).

So, SuperMID or MPGuino - will do due diligence and get one or the other.

I read as many of your threads as I can (my work allows me much Internet time to read). Very pleased to be aboard.
