Today must be fun looking for cars day haha. Darin and I have found a few of them. This definitely isn't one for the beaters thread, but I thought it would be fun to post anyways. 1990 Daihatsu Mira Turbo RHD Quote:

Too bad it isn't a total beater, all the parts on that car fit my fathers miles zx40 as simple drop ins :(

Those seats are awesome.

Also FYI: we had a member here with a Mira (non-turbo)...

Wow, really clean. I am surprised. Grey market car?
Hate to be a downer, but...man that thing is ugly. |
Its fully legal. Just has to be 25 years old and everything is okay.

The state also has something to say on the matter as well, Wisconsin oddly sucks when it comes to gray market cars, you almost need a title place to help. Ah well, would be nice to see the full process and how many hoops are required to get to the license plate. Cheers Ryan |
Hello, I just discovered this thread through some Google search results. I am in the Madison area and I bought this car a few months ago. Haggled a little bit on the stated price. It has just under 50,000 miles, zero rust, and is in top running order. :)
I was looking for an economy car but nothing had enough "quirky/fun" factor for me and most aren't well-equipped cars. This car is the exact opposite of that, with a factory CD player (in 1990!), 4 valves/cylinder, limited slip differential, and a turbo. It is a supremely nimble car and weighs 1535 lbs. The gearing is very aggressive and it never feels slow or lacking for power. I've been daily driving it back and forth to work and averaging 40-41mpg. Fuel is 93 octane because it originally requires Japanese 96 RON, which works out to 92.5 AKI. Getting the license plates was no trouble whatsoever. They didn't even ask to see the federal documentation that came with the car; the valid Iowa title was enough. It was just like any other car. |
Wisconsin will plate anything with a valid us title, but what about if you don't?
My fathers miles zx40 took an entire summer to get plates |
I'm surprised he even GOT plates for that. No doubt there is some special electric vehicle plate for it. Is there a 27mph speed governor?
Wisconsin is difficult about titles if the vehicle doesn't have one. I've talked to a lot of guys that are import motorcycle fans and they also have to deal with title issues. This issue is a byproduct of the "25 year law". Vehicles under 25 years can't get the customs release and therefore can't get a US title. After 25 years, a car is no longer subject to FMVSS (federal motor vehicle code) and is EPA exempt after 21 years. Vehicles are still subject to WI Ch. 305 and 347. The forms I have in the case of a 25 year old car are... DOT HS-7 - import declaration form, certifies 25+ years old and therefore FMVSS exempt EPA 3520 - 21+ year old exemption, however this does NOT exempt any car from state-level in-use emissions testing, which we do not have in this area of Wisconsin Customs 3461 - pre-shipment release authorization Customs 7501 - essentially a shipping bill of lading, for customs purposes and cross-verifying of other paperwork |
Do you do drive-throughs? :D

This car is SO small that it's really not that much trouble to lean over to the other side. Dimensions are 10'10" x 4'7" x 4'7", LxWxH. I can just barely touch the passenger side windshield A-pillar from the driver's seat, without lifting my back away from the seat. I did go through an ATM drive through in reverse one time, just for fun, but otherwise I just park and walk up.
