I think I would like this news more if it was the EU version which gets 51mpg

Still nice to see the price come down. I have a feeling my next vehicle will actually be a dodge truck with cummings engine since they last forever (the engine that is). It will help when I get land but that is still several years off so ...

Looks closer to what I'd want, if only VW had reliability that inspired confidence. Power seats are less than pointless if there isn't memory for multiple drivers. It's annoying how slowly power seats adjust to position.

It seems strange that they choose to keep satellite on the economy car. I don't know anyone that pays a monthly subscription for it, and the audio quality is awful. HD radio is free, and yet companies are very slow to adopt the technology.

Although I'm a diesel fanboy, I think it's too little, too late for the U.S. market. Diesel prices haven't been good since the 90's, and now hybrids and other econo-cars are making it difficult to justify the price premium.

Yes EU version does not meat current US emission standards. Don't think we want to get in that discussion

When you buy a car the dealer will ask you what the purpose of the vehicle is, if you say drive around town, to work and back, your needs will most likely be met by gasoline, on the other hand if you travel 100+ miles a day you need something with more range refering to diesel, the majority of people live within 20 miles of there work, so everyone chooses gas, its not good for a diesel engine to make alot of short trips, you burn alot of fuel and it promotes particulate build up, the price being more expensive can off set someone who has no idea about the benefits,

Interesting. It's a good idea in theory, but it's not really a lot cheaper than the base TDI like I have.

The diesel vw has burned its bridges with our family. We had a diesel 85 and 86 golf. We also had 2 dashers diesels. The golfs were replaced with a geo metro in the early 90s, then a swift, then in 99 another geo metro. Later on an echo on one side of my family. The other side replaced teh golf with a mercedes 240d.

Mercedes has a well made diesel.
