Fuel Efficient Vehicles for the Army

.

A new military vehicle featured by the Department of Defense website boasts a 70% reduction in fuel costs. A military spokesman featured in a video showcasing the vehicle notes that fuel economy is critical to the army, because the cost of fuel is not $4 per gallon, but rather $400 dollars per gallon since it has to be transported long distances across battlefields.

That is my job! So, seventy percent fewer missions? Hooah!

.

Lets see...

1. Light weight aluminum chassis.
2. High efficiency diesel engine.
3. Starter generator combo
4. 6 speed trans
5. Adjustable ride height
6. Utilizes front and rear carbon fiber composite (crash protection?)
7. Accelerator pedal feedback.
8. Lightweight seats
9. Engine electrical accessories are switched
10. Electric brake pump is switched

*Extra* - Personal climate control

So, it goes to show that they are fully aware of what it takes to get good fuel mileage.

Doesn't the M1 Abrams get like... 10 gallons to the mile, or something ludicrous like that?

Xist 02-01-2014 07:38 PM

That is very interesting! I just hope that they apply all of this technology to the trucks that we actually use in Afghanistan!

I hope we get a 'trickle-down' effect to the civilian market once the tech becomes standard-issue and subject to the 'mass production' price reductions...

A lot of us have been drooling over the KLR

Better to look at it as 67 tons/miles per gallons.

Versus 45 tons/miles per gallon for a compact car.

:D

Wow, relatively speaking, 1MPG is pretty good for 60 tons. I guess that turbine engine does something for efficiency!

Superfuelgero 02-02-2014 01:30 PM

And the price is...? Unfortunately, the military is silly in that they don't normally look at TCO, just the contract price.

Is it just me, or did the sound of the door closing, sound like a cheap yard gate?
