Fuel Shark. What?!?

First new thread in a long time.

Anyways, I saw this on the local news site. Looked like a new gimmick that won't do anything. Some sort of "voltage regulator". Anybody ever hear of this?

Gotta love that rigorous test protocol and in-depth news research.

Unicorn it!

There's a few threads on voltage regulators.

The one Consumer Reports tested was found to have an advantage : it has a nice little light on it when it's plugged in ...

Money Shark would have been more appropriate.

Joenavy85 04-27-2011 09:33 AM

same as the fuel doctor, TO THE CORRAL WITH YE!!!

theycallmeebryan 04-27-2011 10:43 AM

Brilliant marketing idea.

Name of the thing you are trying to improve + an animal that's scary or tough = success.

I agree. Unicorn it.

it worked for the GameShark for PS2

gone-ot 04-29-2011 10:50 AM

...BELIEVE IT OR NOT, but GM is uses something vaguely similar on their new cars to reduce alternator load at idle and thus boost fuel economy.

Mrs A's iPhone charger does that. The Octavia loved sitting on the drive for 2 weeks with it plugged in.

jakobnev 04-29-2011 03:10 PM

I wonder how this effects your fuel consumption:

it would help me a lot if i wasn't already into hypermiling, i would stay off of the throttle to avoid having to listen to it

Arragonis 04-29-2011 03:45 PM

Lotus did a load of research into anti-noise to make cars quieter in the early 1990s. They applied the noise of a Ferrari to a 1.0 Citroen AX (45 bhp) just for fun - they noted that it increased the average RPM used by drivers and reduced their MPG quite a bit. :D

No! Nothing can beat throttle body spacers. :p

Decomposing a fuel shark

One national tradition over here is the December 5 celebration of the birthday of Saint Nicholas ("Sinterklaas"), predecessor and namegiver of Father Christmas.

The goodly saint travels over the house roofs on his gray horse, accompanied by so-called "Black Pete"'s, going down chimneys to drop sweets and presents in childrens shoes. And the occasional ecomodder's boot.

Look what he got me:
http://ecomodder.com/forum/member-re...rk-unboxed.jpg

I could not wait to try it out, as you can guess.
Popped it in, keyed to accessory mode, and sure enough it started saving fuel right away even without the engine turning over.
Wow.

I'm curious to see what makes that wonder happen, time for a sharkectomy...

http://ecomodder.com/forum/member-re...sing-shark.jpg

It is quite flimsy, actually. The tip comes off way too easy, dropping the pin, spring and fuse.
But what makes it tick?

http://ecomodder.com/forum/member-re...shark-guts.jpg

A fuse, a blue LED, 2 1.0 K-ohm and 1 1.5 M-ohm resistor, a 2200 microF capacitor.
The capacitor may dampen high and mid frequency noise, but so do the capacitors in the stereo and the cars electronics.
The LED just wastes power.

I'd expect the whole device to waste about 0.05 Watt of electricity rather than save 20% fuel.
But maybe I'm missing the obvious.

Time to read the manual.

Oh my. Trouble!
They accidentally put the manual of a Neo Socket in the box instead of the Fuel Shark manual.
The Neo Socket is similar in shape but misses the Fuel Shark decal on the blue plastic screen.

Nevermind. We'll take the words from the sharks mouth anyway.
Please read carefully...

Have you noticed anything? :D
That invension is too easy to use!
Pity it does not work properly together with other fuel saving devices. Some people sell such rubbish! The poor shark can't cure all.

Now I have a suspicion that this device will not save me any fuel at all, even if i did not keep it stored away for some practical joke or whatever but put it in the car.

Apparently the good saint had his reservations too.
The present came with a poem in which he explained that he had personally tried it out on his horse, but had not noticed any changes in consumption at all.

At least it looks mostly harmless.
If anyone here insists I will do some ABA testing, but, let's face it... Would you expect that a couple of resistors and a tiny capacitor could do any good? Really?

jakobnev 12-07-2014 12:01 PM

Now you can save 60%!:

It looks like a certain type of adult toy.

The kind I am only aware of from my Spam mail...

Probably just as effective at saving fuel too.

Saint Nicholas wrote he tried it out on his horse, no idea where or how, none whatsover... but it did not help efficiency.

I wonder, if the horse wagged its tail people might have thought they saw a police helicopter.

The matter you (Arragonis & Cobb) brought up is giving me the creeps...

I now wonder whether my present was complete after all.
Maybe the Fuel Shark should come with a Neo Socket?
The manual already hinted at it, right?

The box showed some wear... did the saint give me a used Fuel Shark?
Without its protective Neo Socket?

...did that christmas present have a Trojan postage stamp on its wrappings by chance (wink, wink)?

Cobb 12-07-2014 09:17 PM

On ebay you can buy something for almost 100 bucks thats a box with some flashing led lights and a hand full of 8 gauge wires you mount under the hood and to both battery leads. The tear downs shows its a cap inside. The wires basically help ground the stuff under the hood the cap helps to filter noise.

Cobb 12-08-2014 12:51 AM

Absolutely!!! Thats why when you replace your bat with a cap you get such a jump in mpg.

toc 12-08-2014 01:50 AM

I bought a 3 x 5 port cigarette lighter adapters and 10 fuel sharks to go into the cigarette lighter sockets, and I filled up the tank.
That was 2 years ago. 30,000ks since and I still don't need any fuel.

I tells ya, they work really good...

markweatherill 12-08-2014 03:04 AM

Why not do what I did? I bought a thousand fuel sharks, wired them all together and now I simply run my car's engine at idle and it produces fuel. Next month I join OPEC.

It is a bit after hours, but Jalopnik had a take on the Fuel Shark.
