Full Diagnostics on your i-Phone hack

Hello everyone. I just joined the forum last night. I went through the instrumentation links describing how valuable having a scanguage is for tweaking and the justifications for purchasing one. Well, I can across this hack that can be used for obd2 compliant cars using your i-phone.

Really useful hack and does just about everything the scanguage does. So, since everyone is into modding, here's a good one especially if you have an i-phone. Difference between the two? You can make calls and text on the i-Phone and monitor your car, the scanguage can't.

Here's the link provided by Hack-a-Day:

Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome to EM and thanks for the post, :)

I know this was discussed here several weeks (months?) ago, but I don't know if these questions were ever resolved:

Do OBD-II WiFi dongles exist?
How much do they cost?

I remember reading the whole article that the connections were covered in the topic. Look through the website and some other interesting things were covered such as water mist systems, boost controllers and other goodies under the car hack section. Heck the whole site is pretty cool, gps hacks, car computer hacks...

Oh, dogbreath, don't forget to brush your teeth ;)

I do think it's cool that they are targeting a cell phone, but the iphone really ramps up the costs. Main issue I have is that it is $230 for the hardware (plus the cost of an iphone) plus an iphone app that you have to get.

I'm not sure how accurate it is at fuel consumption (or what those screens look like), or how responsive it is, it was a little jumpy and behind on the range test, some cars might lag by a second or so from what I saw, I'd be sad to find that out after dropping $230.

You can buy an awful lot of dedicated gauges for $230, that don't jump around :) And you can hack them to display whatever you want.

Yes, there are other and better guages that would probably be better suited. I think this would be better suited for people that already have an ipod and wouldn't want to spend more money on a scanguage. Besides, if some one already had an ipod, this would be so cool just to pull it out and and connect it.

As for tailored instrumentation, I know for my car ('95 Saab 9000cse) there's a website ecuproject.com where you can actually reprogram your own ecu and connect to a car comp with a few connections and free softwware that would display all of what the ipod hack would do plus more. I think the Civic's have their own site for something like that also.

Welcome to EM! I think this is the thread that KJSatz was talking about.

I agree with dcb that a more generalized solution would be better. I want someone to make one for my uber-obsolete SH3-based LG Phenom. C'Mon, it's only 10+ years old, ;) !!!!!!!

Eeen-tay-rest-ink. The Elmscan bluetooth is also in the $200 range, without software :

To do so, you need the $230 connector  It's wireless, so not really hard connecting... It's not exactly comparable to a SGII (as it's more featured) - but as said, there are other tools. Tools that don't need a wireless connector (I personally don't drive my car from my living room - so I don't need such conveniences) :D

But it screams geek chic to have it on an iPod/iPhone

Now if there were a wired connector for $30... :D
