gas hog

Howdy folks~
Stumbled across your page here, and thought I'd chime in. Good to know what's goin on on both sides of the economic fence~ I normally build hotrods, resto-rods, and classic cars, but the motivation of the day is a *really* old datsun pickup that I'm converting to 4x4, AND econo-modding~ aiming for 35+mpg. I know that doesn't sound like much compared to electric jellybeans, but it's a reachable number~ and I need a TRUCK for all I do!

What year truck Scott? We purchased our first Datsun pickup in 1968. It trained a whole family of drivers, hauled wood, manure, tools, three big guys across the cab (center guy had the gas pedal and shifter, driver got the wheel, clutch, brake) :D

albyneau 04-13-2011 03:17 PM

I'm in shock~ someone took notice of my lowly project! It's a '71, with the old reliable L16 motor. It was converted to an automatic by the original owner. I'm only the third in line here on a 40 year old truck...? Wonders never cease... I'll be putting Suzuki Samurai drivetrain underneath, and the engine trans combo yet to be determined. Any ideas/suggestions? I *definitely* want something newer~ electronic ignition, EFI, etc., and fairly mainstream so as not to buy into parts availability issues down the road. Aluminum head is a MUST, as I'll be pumping up the CR as much as practicable. Large stroke, small bore also quite desireable. That's all for now~ not gonna give up all my super top secret strategies just quite yet!

skyking 04-13-2011 03:51 PM

Well I have a bias, I'd be putting a diesel in there myself. Can't wait to see what happens next.

albyneau 04-13-2011 04:05 PM

Thought of that, Skyman~ but finding lightweight and narrow (52.5") 4x4 axles geared for low-rpm diesels just aren't out there. With the Sami axles I'm committed to running the Sami divorced transfer case as well (offset output shafts)- so noroom for an overdrive to speak of.... The diesel idea's STILL in the back of my mind~ but it's of diminishing practicality....

I've got a 1989 Toyota 4x4 that gets mid-twenties without any hypermiling. I've been flogging it lately and I'm pretty sure I can get 30 mpg without any modification at all.

euromodder 04-13-2011 06:51 PM

In Europe, Suzuki put Peugeot's 1905 cc (1.9 L) XUD 9 turbodiesel in the Samurai.

There's an outfit in the US that sells VW TDi conversion kits :
Suzuki Samurai Turbo Diesel conversion kit for Suzuki Samurai

oh man i love those old datsuns! that would be an awesome project! i would be interested in seeing some of your non-eco projects too... i've been involved in some cool resto - mods too.

for your project i would whole-heartedly recommend a cool turbo diesel if you can get your hands on one... they are all over the place in central america on small pickups and suvs. also the nissan frontier came with a killer turbo diesel in other countries...

Model 1 Vehicle Characteristics

1984 Sentra factory diesel, if you could ever find one, but it would be very hard for me to trash the car if it was decent and complete.

Welcome to ecomodder.

84 Nissan Sentra miles: 104,XXX

Here is an 84 Sentra diesel in Little Rock, just over 100k miles. Original EPA highway was 49 MPG, high speed engine with good power and economy.

crisco 04-13-2011 08:10 PM

if you do find that 84 nissan, you can get alot of info here...http://nissandiesel.dyndns.org/

if it were me, i would pay $1200 for that modern turbo diesel DI from japan :D

Okay ~ thank you all for your input...
BUT NOW I'M PISSED OFF! I spent 25 minutes following links and typing responses to all your thoughtful inputs~ and GOT TIMED OUT and lost it all! That's the kind of BS that leads a fella to goin other directions.. IS THERE A FIX???

albyneau 04-13-2011 09:37 PM

UFO~ had an '82 that I miss dearly! Couldn't pass CA smog- but got 28+ mpg~ go figure...

Upon further research I see the VW's rated 100HP @ 4000 rpms! That just might work...:)

What a sweet deal~ eng/trans/harness/etc. for $1350??? But while I've been out of touch with automotive diesels for the past few years, I still recognize VeeDubs are the KING~ and still the only D-motor on my potential playlist.... I want something I can get parts for on any SUNDAY....

Sorry old guy~ but for the previously mentioned parameters Sentra's ruled out.:(

Thanks Carlo~ but yer tellin me old news. I've been working/building/programming computers since the only color you could get was monitor yellow. You can help us ALL out by telling us what YOUR timer's set at, so I know how to handle the situation. That is NOT too much to ask....

STILL waiting for a response~ when do we time out?? Why the continual error messages? I chose NOT to deal with the internet BS from the support level YEARS ago, yet when I ask for support....? AGAIN~ what is this page's time-out set at? AM I ASKING TOO MUCH?

albyneau 04-13-2011 11:11 PM

evidently so....

albyneau 04-13-2011 11:16 PM

Sooo.... does anybody have any experience econo-modding/ performance tuning the VeeDub motors? Point in a directiion~ lookin 2 learn!

I'm just an unpaid volunteer moderator, I don't *know* what the timeout is. If you look at the bottom of the page you will see this software version :

vBulletin Version 3.8.6

You can R&D the behavior of this software for typical timeouts. You can also do your own test to figure out the timeout by using a binary time search.

We get this complaint from time to time. In my experience, the timeouts mostly occur when people don't check the "Remember Me?" box. That is why I gave you that advice. What is your web browser and version thereof?

From what I can find, the NEO version is a two-year-only grandfather to the still-made YD25DDTI (2001-current), and it *appears* the only changes were to the injection system itself. Do you have any additional info or URL's regading this motor?

samurai or Toyota tranny with a vw turbo diesel. There is more than one outfit that makes swaps for a vw diesel into a zuki using either gear box. rocky road out fitters and acme adapters.

Yep~ I'm all over that! Right now my tentative plan is to (1)- run the stock L16 for a bit, (2)- swap a Toy 20/22R and tranny(then I can set up all the 4x4 driveline stuff), and down the road (3)- eventually go to the VW diesel using said adapter (or make my own). But who knows~ maybe my gasser mods will negate the additional work/expense of the diesel....

you likely know about the 20/22r head swap. I forget which way does what but one is a nice little compression bump. I think if you have the 20 block and 22r head.

In spite of the 22's oversized intake ports they actually flow LESS than the 20's~ due to to early and not-so-effective swirl-port design attempts. The 22's more desirable bathtub chambers and the fact most are fittind w/EFI are their only redeeming qualities. The downside to the 20's are an open (round) chamber design, which creates less combustion chamber swirl resulting in reduced fuel atomization. On the definite upside is their smaller ports, which increase atomization due to the air moving faster. The fix(es)? Extensive welding/reshaping on the 22 head's ports; on the 20's you're looking at a mild port job to clean up, match gaskets, and improve bowl shape just under the valve head, then modifying the intake side to accept the EFI manifold. The head swap you're referring to opens a whole new can of worms in the area of deck height (the distance between crankshaft centerline & haed surface); the 20 has a shorter deck than the 22~ so now we have an additional hurdle to get the timing chain the right length. I believe someone out there is now making the changeover timing set~ bit it's to put the lower compression 20 head onto the 22's block. A lot of work going in the wrong direction! That's why we're all here~ to MINIMIZE fuel consumption. It's a matter of physics~ it takes a given amount of fuel to feed a given size chamber (bore/stroke), to move a given weight object (car), overcoming aerodynamic forces in the process. So I'm opting for the SMALLEST motor practicable to get the job done. That's what makes turbos so attractive; they're load and altitude compensating~ and have little negative impact on economy. In fact they can indeed sometimes IMPROVE fuel mileage....

So to make a short story long~ I'm hoping to find a 20r motor for now...

albyneau 04-15-2011 10:30 AM

And thank you VBulletin~ for not timing me out! LMAO
