Gas pump meter creep

Report: Many Gas Pumps Overcharge Customers

Here's an argument against using the same pump every time:

Quote:

Much ado about nothing, having calibrated many gas pump meters here is the scoop. The meters are set to zero if they can be( state regulated). In some states plus 1 or minus 1 is acceptable. After a pump is calibrated a state seal is attached so that it can`t be tampered with. A meter that won`t calibtate to zero or plus/minus 1 is usually reported and changed. lets say you go to a station that has 6 pumps. Each pump as 2 meters one on each side. Of those 12 meters a few many calibtare to plus or minus. My advice is don`t fill up on the same pump every time. You may or may not be getting the best deal. If you remove the nozzle and set the pump and it creeps up there is a problem somewhere else in the pump. Report it to the manager.

But, "...look, before you leap..." to that new pump, because consistancy is important to long-term MPG numbers.

However, most of the current gas pumps are digital (to accommodate credit card units), so they all 'reset' to 000.00 electronically, not mechanically.

I filled on one pump last week whose reading crept upward after I was no longer dispensing fuel. Yes, a digital pump. It was only a few cents, so while I reported it to the attendant I did not demand any money back.
