Gen 3 Gas Tank Too Small.
Here in Texas, United/Market Street Supermarkets award a point for each dollar you spend. Each 100 points get you 10 cents of every gallon of gasoline you get at their gas stations (up to 25 gallons) Trouble is, I throw away the savings on the extra 15 gallons I can't fit into my 10 gallon tank. I'm thinking of buying three 5 gallon Jerry cans to finish out my 25 gallons, and going to the pump 2 1/2 times less often, with the bonus of building my points to 50 cents off the price of a gallon. Is there a better way?

Got a gas can?
You might be able to find a few cheap ones at yard sales. |
When I can I go with my mother to the gas station to use some of the cheaper gas. I've only done it with my motorcycle and her car as of yet.
|
How much gas can you transfer from the can without spilling?
Mom and I fill up at the same time, with the same discount. The first time we set down the nozzle. The second time Mom fueled and I moved each car. I move much faster than she does. |

I’m curious about this myself, as my car only holds 12 gallons max and I’d also like to double that... only thing I can think of is fabricating a bigger fuel cell to fit in the same space/take advantage of empty space under the car
|
As long as you are not drunk no one should be spilling more than a tea spoon or 2 of gas. If someone can't put gas from a gas can into a car with out spilling it every where they probably shouldn't be driving a car.
Cars stopped having options for a larger gas tanks in the 1970 as far as I know. You could add a few cell but it would be installed inside the car and would cost several hundreds of dollars. If not more to do it right. |
Yeah, I could put it in the spare tire well, but with that traction battery and the 12 V battery so close, I'm not sure how safe that would be.
|
A car with an unprotected gas tank, think ford pinto or old F100 with side gas tanks.
|
There is a large difference between spilling a teaspoon or two and an entire can.
|
If you don't already have the fuel cans, it will take a long time to offset the cost and effort to purchase them.
You probably don't want to handle anything larger than 5 gallons, as gasoline is about 6 lbs per gallon. |

The last time I maxed the fuel savings was back when diesel was above $4/gallon. The truck took 25 gallons, which was the limit for fuel savings, and cost exactly $100 after discount. Very depressing to have "saved" so much, having spent $100 to get 70% of a tank of fuel.
Around the same time I also put $20 of fuel into the truck, and it didn't even turn the low fuel light off. |
The existing tank is likely very oddly shaped and takes advantage of lots of available space.
Have you seen the stock tank? Fuel cells come in 2 common shapes, cube and rectangular prisem in all different sizes and then custom for the most common race car converts, where the manufacturer just copies the stock design of the original tank. I don't see it being possible to get a gas tank for a modern car that holds 5 or 10 more gallons. |
Yeah, you'd probably have to remove the rear seat, or allow the tank to hang dangerously low to the ground.
|
All good points, guys, but this is the best:

Don't cheap out transporting fuel. The install above is a range extender, it almost doubles the capacity 11 —> 21 gallons. With the NATO-style can with the locking pin in the latch you can throw them off a tank and they still work. If you put those on a hitch mount, they'd squirt like a pumpkin seed before they crush in a rear-ender. |
Very nice! Or, I could store the full cans in my garage. Of course, at $70 a piece, it would take 280 gallons of gas at $.50 per gallon discount, (or about 11,000 miles of driving) to reach the payback point.
Not TOO bad an investment. What if I hitch mount them, and insulated them from the sun and thieves with a locking cover box? will they still squirt? |
In my case there was some value in justifying the investment in that stress bar. :) I saw the invoice the other day, $130 — so you're not far off.

They CAN be had cheaper, if they are any good:
US 5 Gallon 20L Gas Storage Tank Can Emergency Backup Steel Metal Jerry Can Army Green - Tmart AND it will only take about 4,000 miles to reach break even point. Bonus $.50 per gallon after that! |
How about rigging a 25-gallon fuel trailer? Park it in your garage and fill up your car as needed.
|
Yeah, thinking about carrying a couple of jerry cans in the wheel well pods of my trailer:

If I put a fuel bladder in the spare tire well of my Prius, and sealed the well from the inside of my trunk area, wonder how much fuel I could carry in that bladder?
|
OR, this would probably fit my spare tire wheel well:
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Moeller-....c100005.m1851 And would only take 10,000 miles of driving to reach break even point, at $50 discount per gallon. I would have 880 miles of driving per fill up. averaging 40 mpg. |
|
Uh....yeah, but I'd need over a dozen of these to make 15 gallons.
|
Considering the collectable nature of them they would never ROI.
I just like the one with the leather strap handle. If I'm out of gas I'd like to show up at the station with one of those. |
bladder

The bladder could rupture in a rear-end collision. The safety cells are engineered to help prevent that. |
This one has lower line attachments to feed the Prius tank. Payback would be about 11,000 miles. I would fill the Prius tank first, the add up to the 25 gallons point to the racing cell.

This one is a bit smaller, but with the Prius 10 gallon tank, and this, I could fill to 25 gallons. Payback would be about 9,000 miles:

I didn't even know fuel cells could be had for close to $100.
Scary. |
Seems like the solution! I should be able to put this in the spare tire well, cover it to seal it from the interior, leaving the fill cap exposed for filling. (yes, a second fuel filler flap on the fender of the car would be preferable) being sure to provide venting to under the car, turn the car off for refueling, wipe the filler opening well, and be safe from electrical caused explosion.
Ideal would be to slice into and weld to the car's fill tube, and keep the whole race tank isolated from inside the car, but that's a higher skill than I have just to save 50 cents per gallon. Any better ideas? |
I would just put a Reece caddy on the cars trailer hitch and ratchet strap up to 3 gas cans on there.
This was the original use for my home made Reece caddy, transportation of up to 4 gasoline jugs or up to two 20lb propane tanks to and from the store. Now I just use my 4x8 utility trailer. |
I don't know what I'd be willing to pay for the privilege of not having to mess about filling jerry cans, but I'm sure it exceeds the $1.50 per fillup you're trying to save.
|
$50 per gallon discount = $12.50 on a 25 gallon fill up.
10 fill ups pays for the extra race tank. |
I'm confused. I thought you'd save $0.10 per gallon?
|
OK, I accidentally dropped the decimal point. You save $.10 per gallon up to 25 gallons for every $100 you buy in the store. The limit is 500 points redeemed for $.50 off each gallon up to 25 gallons. ($12.50)
Since my tank is so small, I usually have to refill when I only have 200 points. and, only get $.20 per gallon savings on 10 gallons. ($2.00) An additional 15 gallon tank would allow me to drive longer and build up my points to the maximum savings of $.50 per gallon. |
They're living in your head rent free. :)
