geo metro engine swap?
I am looking at two geo metros one is a 95 with a good solid motor but the clutch is just about gone and the body is beat up, the other is a 96 with a blown motor and a new paint job with great interior. the question is will the motors swap? they are both 1.0L 3cyl engines.

Because of the OBDII computer starting in 1996 it will not be a direct swap, salvage yard appear to be charging $150-$600 for good metro engines and there appear to be alot of them.

I am pretty sure the motors are the same. If you are just using the "long block" from the older car and swapping all the newer parts onto that motor, you shouldn't have to worry about OBD2.

correct me if im wrong but from what i understand the obdII just moniters o2 sencers and such, so if i leave the 96 intake and exaust manifolds then there shouldnt be any problem. does the obdII do anything to affect performance (fuel economy)?

They will directly swap over so long as you keep the manifolds and sensors from the recipient vehicle. The long blocks are the same with the only difference being that newer cars have a provision for a crank angle sensor that is not present on earlier engines. I think it is welded to the oil pan ( which is why you can't use a pan gasket on later cars and must instead use silicone to maintain the proper air gap) so you an just choose not to hook it up in the older car. Also, some cars have a 4 bolt crank flange and some a 5 bolt. I think the later ones are 5 bolt. My 91 has a 5 bolt engine in it and works just fine. I have no idea what it came out of as it was there when I got it.

Putting the '95 engine in the '96 will require swapping over the OBDII crank sensor. I think you need at least the oil pump and oil pan from the '96 engine. There's a guide somewhere on TeamSwift.net for converting the older engine to OBDII.
