Geo Metro High-Speed chase

Today, I was reading an article about photography.

The premise was that it's the PHOTOGRAPHER who makes a photograph, not the CAMERA.

The article said that "even a crummy car like a Geo Metro" can elude police with the right driver.

Now that got my attention, and I had to follow the link.

So here it is:
The Morning News: News : Police Chase Car At High Speeds

The chase lasted nearly 20 minutes and reached speeds of 110 miles per hour. The driver lost the police.

My lil 45hp citroen goes around corners faster than anyone (go-kart). A 70hp Metro is no slouch.

Sounds like the driver was a stoner. Embarrassing for the pursuit vehicles, especially the one that wrecked.

Robin Hood rides again! Have weed will travel! Down with burgers and booze!

That's gold. I always tell the newbs at the race track with their pricey cars - good cars don't make good drivers, good drivers make good cars.

Apparently the cop in the story was not a good driver :p

Probably overestimated the capabilities of the cruiser. "If that Metro can go around that corner that fast, so can I." Horsepower != cornering capability. :-)

LOL at the comments....................

So Bud light salutes you, oh Andretti of dirt . . . cuz no one but you . . . .can get away with only 70 horsepower. . . . .Mr. Drive Away in a Geo Metro Guy

Cars that get high mpg 40+ usually are very light. That's why they can reach 110+ with no problem. I can bounce off my speed limiter in 5th gear easily. If it wasn't there at 120mph the car would probably hit 140mph with no problems.

Johnny Mullet 02-07-2009 06:25 AM

And little cars like the Metro can handle corners at high speeds.

Memorytwo 02-09-2009 03:08 AM

its like the concept of the lotus exige. small light, adaquate horsepower, nimble.

ShadeTreeMech 06-14-2010 09:07 PM

LOL This happened in my neck of the woods!

Police Chase Car At High Speeds
Officers eluded on Benton County back roads
By Bob Caudle

SPRINGDALE — A white Geo Metro, sporting a 70 horsepower engine,
managed to elude officers from four Northwest Arkansas law enforcement
agencies in high-speed chase Tuesday.

Police are searching for the man thought to have been driving the car,
Charles Hammons, 32, of Springdale.

The car, which police say reached speeds of 110 mph, led them from
Thompson Street in Springdale, where Springdale officers attempted to
stop the vehicle for fictitious tags at approximately 10:10 a.m.

The driver floored the Metro, with police in pursuit.

The chase continued south on Thompson and west on Main Street in
Johnson. The chase went down Main Street in Johnson at 60 mph,
according to Chris McCarville, public information officer for the
Springdale Police Department.

The Metro’s driver steered his vehicle on Interstate 540 and headed
north, turning west on U.S. 412. He turned onto Old Highway 62 and the
chase continued over several county roads in Benton County with
Springdale police, the Arkansas State Police, the Benton County
Sheriff’s Office and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office all in
pursuit.

The pursuit went cold at 10:28 a.m. when a Springdale police car
wrecked on Logan Cave Road in Benton County.

Officers lost sight of the vehicle somewhere near Springtown after
Springdale officer Stacy Bohannan lost control of the police car on
the dirt road, spun out and hit an embankment. She was not injured in
the wreck. The chase lasted 18 to 19 minutes and covered 24 miles,
police said.

A female passenger in the car managed to get out of the vehicle after
police lost the speeding car on Benton County back roads.

Hammons has an outstanding warrant for failure to pay traffic summons,
McCarville said. Officers said they recovered what was believed to be
marijuana thrown from the car at the beginning of the chase.

Benton County sheriff’s deputies found the woman passenger walking
along Arkansas 112 after she got out the vehicle.

She is not being charged and is cooperating with police, McCarville
said.
Go figure, it was a woman police officer that wrecked. Hate to sound sexist, but I fear woman drivers! They don't seem to pay attention very well.

IsaacCarlson 06-15-2010 12:33 AM

I don't want to sound sexist either but I have observed the same thing.

Frank Lee 06-15-2010 04:40 AM

I don't care if I sound sexist. They are to be feared!

this is as good as a recent artical in my local paper saying almost all sport bikes can reach speeds in exess of 200mph.. his research consisted of walking into a dealership and looking at a bikes speedometer..

Boydness 06-18-2010 08:39 AM

Maybe he honed his driving skills play GTA...
