German journalists eke out 73 mpg in a production car

Who translated the German article.

This time, a high mile per gallon number was recorded in Europe and not with a Peugeot. A group of German motor journalists managed to get 3.2 l/100 km (73 mpg U.S.) in a Skoda Fabia TDI Greenline. The car had a 1.4 TDI (diesel) engine good for 80 HP. The thirty-six journalists (we're guessing not all of them at the same time) drove the Czech subcompact for 124 km (about 80 miles), using normal highways between Austria and Germany and never going below 60 km/h (40 mph). The only "trick" they used was maintaining as constant a speed as possible. The 73mpg figure handily beats the official EU highway cycle figure, which is 4.1 l/100 km (57mpg). Skoda belongs to the VW group and is based in the Czech Republic.

I wish they sell those diesel engines/cars here in the states. Of course the cost of diesel here is about a dollar more than regular gasoline. Of course there is off-road diesel...

I think you can thank the EPA for the no diesels. So we burn more gallons of gasoline per mile, (using diesel trucks to transport these significant extra amounts of gasoline to stations) probably creating more pollutants, than if we used LESS gallons of diesel and made some soot, but perhaps less total pollution.
And of course there is veggie diesel fuel..

The best part is that they didn't do anything fancy to get it, :)

as for the diesels yes and you could run then on biodiesel too.. thats about 50% cleaner than any gas car.. I hate the EPA and there rulings on diesels..

Good article.. imaging what a good hypermiler could do with one of these small diesel cars.. i bet we could break 100mpg

Diesel doit

From www.wisegeek.com:

Europe also uses more diesel power than the United States does: of the top ten fuel-efficient cars in Europe, only one uses conventional gasoline.

The most fuel-efficient cars in Europe all have fuel efficiency over 64 miles to the gallon, which translates to 27 kilometers per liter. The car which tops the list is the Citroen C1, followed by the Toyota Aygo, Renault Clio, Citroen C2, Fiat New Panda, Toyota Prius gasoline hybrid, Citroen C3, Vauxhall Corsa, Peugeot 206, and another model of the Vauxhall Corsa. Many of these cars are available in other parts of the world including Africa and Asia, where a high premium is placed on gas efficiency as well.

Wiki...

A 1.4 L 4-cylinder HDI diesel engine which has a fuel economy of 68.9 mpg[clarify] is also available.

ebacherville 06-05-2008 04:09 PM

here is how to import a car.. but if they dont meet crash and emmisions standards they have to become compliant and or destroyed or exported.. 2.5% Fee to do so ..

http://foreignborn.com/visas_imm/ent...ingyourcar.htm

SO basically any diesel wont be allowed in and you'll need to meet all new car standards..

The wont let me drive a air bag equipped, foreign car but they will let me drive a 1300 cc crotch death rocket.. Fricken feds wrecking my day yet again!!
