i think it would depend on how wide your rims are, plus they will be shorter, so your gearing will differ

On every vehicle sold in the US, there is a sticker - commonly called the placard - that will list the original tire size and the vehicle manufacturer's specified pressure for that size. The placard is usually located on a doorpost or in the glove box, but sometimes it is located in the trunk or on the fuel filler door.

My book does not list a Jeep ZJ, and the listings for Jeep CJ's list quite a lot of different tires sizes as original. What do not want to do is go smaller in load carrying capacity. That increases the risk of a load related tire failure - which sometimes has tragic consequences. So if your placard says the original tire size is a 225/70R15, do not use a 215/70R15.

Not to mention that you'll get better fuel economy with a larger tire.

according to this Sizes To Fit Your Vehicle
the size you currently have and what size you think was stock, could both be stock sizes.
It's probably a 6 or 7 in wide wheel. If it is a 7 in wide, 215 may be pushing the limit for narrow. If it's 6, you shouldn't have a problem. Any easy way to know how wide the rim is, is to measure from wheel lip to wheel lip, just stick a ruler or tape measure through one of the openings, and get something flat to place across the front and back side to get a some what accurate reading

They are 15"x7"

You look stock at 235 although 225 sounds familiar

hmm if its 15x7 i should be okay with 215s because the max width for 215s are 7in. and the sumitomos are well over my GVWR. i think my curb weight is mid to high 5000lbs
and these tires are rated 1600s each, which is at least 6400 total. I might shoot for the kumho 215 75 15 since theyre slightly bigger so i wont get such a big speedo error. I wanna switch to something thinner width wise to improve my gas mileage, and more just because i dont need such wide tires, but this also means i will need to replace my full size spare. my jeep is all time all wheel drive.
