Rumour has it there is a cheaper and lighter alternative that gets about the same economy as a Gen 2 Prius.

It doesnt nessesary need to be a prius.
Just some secondhand car. Not to expensive. And low in fuel use also for short distances...

I don't know what electricity rates are near you, but for short trips you should get an EV. Used Leafs are cheap in the US. I'll be replacing one of my vehicles with an EV in the next couple years.

EV's are not payable overhere, the cheapest ones start at only 15000€
(while they are new available starting at 22000€)
