Going for FOUR

Hey guys.

I am going to try rigging up the cycle with four batteries today.

I have decided to have the two upper front batteries side-by-side, sticking out a little bit.

I have some "unistrut" I got at the Home Depot - $10 for 10 feet. Nice strudy stuff, but it cuts fine with a hacksaw, and it comes with holes in it for bolts.

I will snap some pics as I work on it, so you can see when I am done.

Somewhere around, I have an old, hand-held GPS. I would love to find that to test against the speedometer. I don't trust the speedometer accuracy.

Very cool Ben. That should hopefully get you up to 45 mph don't you think?

Yeah, I am guessing that with the 48V system, I should be able to do 45.

Also, my DC/DC converter cuts out below 32 or 33 volts, which is easy to do under load when the batteries are run down a little on the 36V system.

48V should keep my converter from cutting out and killing my lights at night. Not that I do much night riding, I would still rather not have that happen!!!!

New Cycle Specs!

New System Voltage: 48V

New top speed: 47 MPH!!!

Ouch! That bug hurt when it hit me!

Awesome!

...but you forgot pictures. ;)

I went for a 21.5 mile ride! Why? Because I could!

Went up the big hill at 40 mph and then down it at 52. Zipped around for a while.

LOTS O' FUN!!!!

Scroll down a bit to see the new ones.

I don't like the look of the cycle quite as much with the batts sticking out, but I sure like the speed and range!!!!

Awesome :-)

21 miles becomes useable on near everyday status for me.

What if you modified the front 2 tubes? Would you have space then?

Looks good. The only thing I would suggest is to angle and round off the edges of the unistrut stuff. It looks like it would hurt if it hit your leg in the wrong spot.

Yeah, I have to file down the edges.

I have a few other things to do as well. My plan was just to put it together like this to test the functionality, make sure the batteries weren't in the way of my legs or feet, etc.

I will pull this back apart, paint all the metal black (to match the frame) and install lock-nuts and washers.

Since I removed all wood parts from the cycle (except the very bottom plate) I no longer have a place to screw down the master power contactor - so that's just "floating there" right now too! I will need to make a little something for that to mount to.

I am also waiting on the new 48V charger, so I won't do anything until I get that and decide where it goes too.
