Got a 10 hp diesel engine, what now?

i bought a 10 hp diesel engine off ebay. It'a yanmar clone. seems to be well made, it starts easy. I have not been able to put a load on it.

My thoughts was to build a generator. but i really have no need.

I can pick up a cushman/ club car mini trucks cheap surplus from local AFB where i work. Would be a neat project. Again, no need.

I could build a hybrid out of a Porsche 914 i have, but i fear this is too complex to expensive,

i just bought a new Vtwin motor for my lawn mower, so no need there, and the 10 hp is a little too small anyway.

I fancied a diesel power motorcycle, but can't find an old frame cheap. Seen plenty of these on the net, rumors of 110-140 mpg. hmmm. my commute takes me a highway, so i would need to go 75 mph easy, not sure this would have enough power. And since i work at the AFB, i would have to take a bunch of safety classes, and all before I could ride to work.

Any ideas??

What do you think?

Sell it to me for like $15... so I can use it on my CVT/Deezle road legal buggy.

OOH! I want one!

I'd either do the diesel street bike, or homebuilt streamliner trike. It's too small for any "conventional" auto conversion as a prime mover. Might make a good powerplant for a home-made plug-in hybrid.

What is redline rpm?

I've got a scooter frame you can buy :D

Totally make a motorcycle/scooter. It'd make an excellent prime mover (that wording is so funny to me).

Reminds me of prime rib, or prime numbers, or prime real estate...

Hmm, the 110hp commonrail turbodiesel under Svietlana's hood is a little overpowered. A 10hp diesel would give me much better FE, plus no worries about Dad-in-law going too fast ;) Wanna trade, your engine for mine? (Just kiddin' :p )

I like the one with the milk crate over the motor. :D

It has a useful rpm range. Do you think you'll make a motorcycle or trike with it?

blueflame 04-22-2009 04:44 AM

Would be ideal for a sub 30ft sail boat. Marine diesels cost a packet. Even for just 2 years use makes these clones a cost affective option.

All coated with oil they could last for years on the sea?
