Grant Thompson, the King of Random passed away.

Was he sick? Did he blow up himself?

Apparently the family refuses to give any information at this time and just says "Respect our privacy." Rumor is he disappeared paragliding and was just found today: https://www.ksl.com/article/46607221...h-of-hurricane

I kind of feel that someone with 11 million followers on YouTube alone stopped being a private person a long time ago. Also, if they give one one-sentence explanation, they will probably need to ask fewer people to respect their privacy.

I do not have any idea what will happen with the channel, but we do not have any idea how much involvement he has had in months.

Do I still call Nate his sidekick?

redpoint5 07-30-2019 06:07 PM

I don't like obituaries precisely because they don't describe what killed the person. No matter how embarrassing my death is, I feel comfortable making that public knowledge. I want my tombstone (I don't actually want a tombstone or a legal burial) to say "Here lay redpoint5, Invincible!" Just want to give people a chuckle in an otherwise miserable day.

Don't know who Grant Thompson is. Powered paragliding is something I intend to pursue one day when I have more time.

Xist 07-30-2019 06:34 PM

Just carry GPS or something, okay?

I regularly post\complain about The King of Random['s sidekick]. They post some cool projects, but seem to cater to their eight year-old fans more than anything.

An old friend disappeared from Facebook and I found her obituary. The only detail they gave regarding her death was that it was sudden.

I created a thread when my ex died, asking for help from someone on Facebook. Her family did not like me and I was trying to find closure.

She did not have over 11 million followers, though, although she had 527 Facebook friends, and most of us never found out what happened.

conor_v 07-30-2019 07:25 PM

I saw this too and I was a bit shocked. I seriously did not believe it at first due to the lack of explanation given for his death. I understand the wish for privacy but I kinda agree with you Xist. I am also just really curious because he was so young!

redpoint5 07-30-2019 07:49 PM

As I figure it, if I'm close to someone I'll find out one way or another how they met their demise. Otherwise, I probably wasn't keeping that close in touch with them, at which point learning about their demise comes more as shocking entertainment than something to gather with loved ones for support. I understand the curiosity element, as I'm extremely curious about most things. That said, I value others boundaries more than my own curiosity. Something I may not always be quick to pick up on.

Xist 07-30-2019 09:19 PM

He is popular enough the truth will come out before too long and the first person to break the story will get a great deal of attention.

It is ridiculous what people will do for attention.

My ex-wife buried her third (or forth) husband. Do you think I have a shot?

It depends on how powerful the gun was, with which she shot him.

I know the difference between cardinal and ordinal numbers, but I'd swear the spell checker flagged it (although it doesn't now, prolly miss-spelt in another way).

I just watched The Candace Owens Show: Carl Benjamin on Youtube and at the end she gave him two minutes to tell the world anything he thought they should hear and all he said was "You are a flawed person and should probably exercise more restraint in your life and more forgiveness to the people around you".

So now I have to live up to that!

RedDevil 07-31-2019 03:22 AM

FWIW the news broke out; paraglide accident confirmed.

Shaneajanderson 07-31-2019 10:29 AM

It amazes me that the people who do stupid things of no importance get huge followings on Youtube, and actual educational channels get little to nothing usually.

A couple of my favorites that buck that trend are Cody's Lab, Smarter Every Day, and AvE, though the last curses like a drunken sailor, he knows his stuff when it comes to tools and industrial machines.

freebeard 07-31-2019 11:38 AM

I'm amazed by Jörg Sprave.

He went from a slingshot channel with his infectious laugh, to going eyeball-to-eyeball with the beast itself: https://duckduckgo.com/?q=fairtube
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZZ5Kouj_hQ
They crossed the wrong guy. The same dynamic propelled Carl Benjamin (Sargon of Akkad) into politics.

Meanwhile Bel Delphine is selling her bathwater (in very small jars).

Xist 07-31-2019 12:06 PM

People called "The King of Random" a science channel.

There was at least one collaboration with Cody's Lab.

From what I've seen of KOR, it was less science than it was just blowing stuff up, though the collabs were sometimes better.

But even his collab with Cody's lab I saw was simply blowing up a toilet with sodium.

The opening minute and a half of Just Another Thing In Space That Could Kill Us All | Answers With Joe is an homage to the Hydraulic Press Channel.

Curses because heavy equipment squashed parts of him, sharp things poked him, & sharper things cut him? Yeah, I stay away from that stuff.

Xist 08-01-2019 12:20 AM

What about his vices?!

Xist 08-01-2019 12:31 AM

He seemed to tone down the explosions once he faced federal charges, but they also started doing dangerous things in the desert and\or in a concrete dome.

freebeard 08-01-2019 01:17 AM

I for one appreciate the inventiveness of AvE's fabricobbling fumblemuckery.

Progress is fine, but it's gone on for too long.: One of my vices is vises, Eclipse

Tell me more about the concrete dome?

No he's not an idiot. In fact the guy is brilliant, and I enjoy what he does. It's not the typical stupid Youtube persona, though he does have an occasional very odd humor post. I was simply saying that throughout his videos foul language abounds. If you can get past that, there's a lot to be learned.

It is a dome made out of concrete. They call it "the concrete dome." Let's move on.

(That was paraphrasing Brian Regan's science experiment he liked to call "Cup of dirt")

I was not sure what else there was to say, so I told Google "King of Random concrete dome."

It suggested these three videos, which I updated:

https://ecomodder.com/forum/attachme...1&d=1564676358

I do not want to disrespect the dead or be insensitive to anyone who has "feelings," it just seemed like an odd suggestion, especially when I was querying regarding the concrete dome, and the most popular discussion was how he passed away.

During the second "The Tick" series, where Patrick Warburton was the titular hero, he met his hero, a Superman-type named "The Immortal," who died doing what he loved.

The Tick read The Immortal's autobiography and said "I don't get it, I read the entire book, and he never mentions being dead!"

Don't ask me why that show got canceled!

I could not find any additional information about the concrete dome. If you search YouTube for "King of random concrete dome" you get some videos where they use the dome, but they never talk about it.

Going to YouTube I saw this clip show in his memory:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKIvrZ-gA1w

freebeard 08-01-2019 05:23 PM

I acknowledge it's a sad story. Shoulda stuck to selling their bathwater, like Bel Delphine.

The dome was the only part that grabbed my attention. I was wondering if it was a Monolithic dome. I took 'King of random concrete dome' to DDG Images and the first one was the Kingdome being imploded.

Soph posted a new video Pride and Prejudice, and her whole channel was memory-holed.

redpoint5 08-01-2019 06:33 PM

Censorship for the sake of protecting people's fragile egos is dumb. If people can't handle certain ideas or language, they aren't forced to watch/listen.

That said, I support the right of owners of some product (Youtube/Google) to set whatever rules they want, or to even break their own rules (right to deny service to anyone, for any reason).

If Soph is so inclined, she can find other outlets for her content, and if people are so inclined, they can find that content. Youtube essentially drives away users when they ban stuff, so it's their loss.

That said, while Soph is entertaining, there's only so much antagonistic delivery that I can find entertaining at a time before craving a longer dialogue that isn't so antagonistic. While political correctness is BS, people shouldn't strive to be antagonistic either; it's the opposite extreme of political correctness (actually just the opposite side of the same antagonistic coin). Being decent is somewhere in the middle, and strives to neither be antagonistic, or be antagonized.

...that said, I do tend towards trolling. It's a bit antagonistic, but my intention is to ignite discussion, not self-loathing.

freebeard 08-01-2019 08:20 PM

She's long since mirrored on *****ute. She did get the comments section back before it all went away again. It's reposted already on Youtube.

Trolling works, as Elijah Cummings has found. For a master look for DoctorRandomercam on George Carlin on Men and Women.

This is the first relevant video that I have seen by someone that knew Grant. I thought Cody just rambled. Oh well.

The channel good and basic did one too. Apparently the dad of the guy who runs that channel was a longtime coworker/friend of Grant's.

Xist 08-03-2019 06:51 PM

I have not heard of that channel.

While everyone says that Grant did everything behind the scenes, Cody said in that video that Grant was retired.

I’d say you dodged that bullet. Return fire isn’t recommended at this late date. My ex is on her third. His fourth.

(I was reading on advances in sabot shells for fully rifled shotguns the other day. A Tyrannosaurus-killing 600-grain, 3,700 lbs/ft near the muzzle. 4” groups at 200-yards guaranteed (Ithaca). But would you consider an ex as Bambi or nearer Godzilla? So while Bambi is in trouble at 150-yards, you’ll need to creep in REAL close for something Jurassic. Like ex-wives. So, don’t.

Vman455 08-05-2019 10:52 AM

So, this was the $78 Tesla guy? I must have missed that somewhere.

He was also Mormon, but possibly on his way out--there's much speculation over at the Ex-Mormon board.

Xist 08-05-2019 10:54 AM

The $78 Tesla guy is Graham Stephen.

I had not looked into his religious beliefs and practices, I just enjoyed most of his videos.

Ex-Mormon forums sound like lame places to hang out.

Yes and no; the reaction for a lot of people who leave the Mormon church is the same--antagonism and anger; but, it's interesting to see where people go from there, and a few of the people who post there are worth reading.

But, their audience is, as their name suggests, Ex-Mormons, so YMMV.

Xist 08-09-2019 11:38 AM

Fun, my threads keep going off-topic, and it is not my fault!

This came out yesterday and I am not that interested in it for some reason, but it has several other YouTube channels that I like, just not Cody's Lab.

Strangely, it is some sort of a fundraiser. For the kids? It looks like some kind of scholarship.

For his kids?

Strangely, the top comments are various people saying they will miss him. Cody said Grant retired. I do not have any idea when the last time I saw him was, but Callie had him help her, which was a strange reversal. It seemed like he left the show before she came along.

I still do not know they give us any real details, but here is a video filmed in front of it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GEbmwEv2sgs

freebeard 08-18-2019 02:12 PM

It appears to be a Monolithic [style], gunnite sprayed over an inflated form.

Unfortunately, it doesn't have an oculus, else it wouldn't be dark inside in mid-day.

Xist 08-18-2019 05:01 PM

That would sound good for ventilation. Yes, there is a giant hole in the side, but smoke rises.

Or does it...

Huh: Why does smoke sink at night and rise during the day?

Wow, this is so easy it is disappointing! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rV96JDVe61s

I still want to see them do this on a King of Random scale!

freebeard 08-18-2019 08:17 PM

Sounds like a lot of work. I put the one-hitter on the desk by my laptop keyboard and the smoke flows out of the bowl through the carburetor hole, and pools on the desktop.

You're right about ventilation, but it's also important for lighting. The Pantheon has an oculus that is proportioned similar to the eye and it's iris. Beyond that, if it's too big UV will bleach out your living room furniture.

The rest of ventilation is openings around the periphery and some sort of ventilator control — Fuller's rotating cone or Indian teepee smoke flaps.

edit:
Since I posted I found this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RoGuvvzHY1A
They discuss the quality of light and the psychological effect of the hemispherical space. And there's a panelized pod structure as well.

Mark Rober dedicated his latest video to Grant

As always, Mark had an awesome video. He and Science Bob filled a pool with Elephant's Toothpaste! What is Elephant's Toothpaste?! Watch the video! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kou7ur5xt_4&l

Xist 01-20-2024 12:56 PM

There is yet another new host on The King of Random, but it is cool because the son made a cameo?

I stopped watching a long time ago and it looks like they have averaged less than a video a month, and 5 of them were just about stuff that Grant did.

I hadn't clicked on any recent videos in perhaps two years, but I can't imagine watching any of these videos.

This guy says that he helped build Grant's first forge and he shows how to shatter aluminum and then it skips to showing the dice he made.

"If you want to see how I made this, comment."

Apparently, this is their new gimmick. The video is only 6.5 minutes long and not very interesting. I certainly don't care about an extended edition: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSyYIofZ7lo I heard of different ways of making napalm when I was a kid and I melted styrofoam peanuts in gasoline. I heard of using soap shavings or tide. I didn't know that you could shave ABS and make napalm, but do you care? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lyxj5xfOL0Y He shows them burning, but he doesn't compare them or anything, and then he says to comment if we want to see some part of this.

The next time I see this channel recommended I will remove it.

I thought I already did.
