Pictures from China: cars and modding

Last summer I was in China for a few weeks for a family visiting trip. Here are some pics I have been planning to share with you all ever since (there are more in the album on my EM page).

A "kamm" of sorts:

A "new driver" sticker, required for all newly licensed drivers during their first year. It is fairly large, easily seen at a distance, and is placed in the rear window:

A scooter with heavy tape welding:

More in the album. I prefer posting them here to posting them on facebook, which is a creepy site now (maybe always was).

My minimum fuel economy goal is 55 mpg while averaging posted speed limits. I generally top 60 mpg. See also my Honda manual transmission specs thread.

Electric scoots were everywhere in China last year, and must be more common now, since the law that mandated them was expanding to all new scoots and small motorbikes, IIRC. That was a good move. I remember 10 years ago that the scoots were some of the biggest air quality polluters. But now China has so many cars, the air is worse, anyway.

BTW, something like only 10% of Chinese licensed drivers have had their license for more than 3 years.

And traffic in Beijing was no better than LA. At times, I felt like I WAS in LA.

I was aware that some cities such as Shanghai banned new scooters with gasoline-powered engines, so LPG-powered ones became prevalent.

Maybe you were in 'Chinatown' of LA of the "BLADE RUNNER" movie?

Hahaha! Seriously, it was modern, complete with glass skyscrapers and 6 and 8 lane super highways--all full of new cars as well as beaters... and all stuck in stop and go traffic.
