Cell phone battery powered car

US Cellular has been advertising that if you give them your discharged battery they will exchange it for a charged one. This has tempting implications for an electric car

U.S. Cellular

Only if you want to stand there swapping 3,000+ cells... That is assuming they HAVE 3,000+ cells. And that'd be good for what, about 40 miles?

hey, come on now, each battery, in an ideal world, could push an electric car 50-80 feet.
yeah, about 3,000 cells.

Hello -

Sounds like a Tesla configuration :

Tesla: Little electric roadster that could - USATODAY.com - 4/15/2008
Quote:
Rather than design a new battery from scratch, they made the roadster's energy-storage system a multitude of rechargeable laptop computer battery cells — 6,831 per car — arranged in a half-ton block that's catacombed with cooling channels. Each cell is a little bigger than a AA battery, virtually identical to the few lithium-ion cells that power the IBM ThinkPad on which this story was written.

The battery pack is designed to last more than 100,000 miles and operate in weather extremes, says JB Straubel, Tesla's chief technology officer.

Practical solar transportation plans at SolarVehicles.org, an open-source project to build fuel-less solar energy transportation.

Discounted Cell-phone batteries for the power source on most of these vehicles. The light weight and modest speed of these DIY commuters really help make the concept work-so well in fact that the creators don't even use the plug-in option, relying entirely on the (relatively inefficient)solar panels for charging...
