Happy New Decade to all the lurkers

You know who you are, no need to say anything. I lurk everywhere except Ecomodder, so I can relate.

As of... now ...then — it's coming up on 2AM Zulu Time.

Not everyone drives a Metro/Firefy or G1 Insight here. Just today I trailered my 1958 Canadian Beetle down-river and it's now ensconced in the carport.

It spent twenty years in that barn. It's important to not let go of your childhood dreams.

I've had this model even longer:

and this Lexus 69hp electric axle for ??? years to put in it:

The thread was inherently flawed — no-one joined up to reply. Why am I not surprised.

But 54 people [or bots] viewed it, and only 605 online at the moment.

I'll get the lights. [click]

Happy new year!

Went to a 20's dance, which was awkward because I'm the worst dancer ever. I tried though. We were the youngest people there, which is unusual because we're not very young.

What - you greet the lurkers, and then you're disappointed that they do what they do best, which is lurking and therefore not replying?

I bet they all were like "Hey, I love this guy. I would surely break my lurking habits and post to tell him so, but I feel put off by his insistence on lurking... Ah well. Lurk". ;)

So that's that. On with the really important stuff: Happy New Year! :)

So that's that.
Exactly it. (And to call attention to the peanut gallery)

And the [click] Permalink #2 was an attempt to lock out the regulars, with predictable result. :)

Happy New Year, enjoying a day off watching the Rose Bowl. Go Ducks!

I was kinda hoping someone would say the decade doesn't start until the end of this year. Then I could recite the story of the computer programmer who kept counting his luggage and getting an off by one error.

We're in the zeroth year of the decade.

Love the lurkers!

I must admit I'm a massive lurker on ecomodder, but I feel like I must defend the lurker!

10 years (and multiple vehicles) I've been on this site, very rarely :turtle:do I post, but only because I have little to add.

There are so many here who are so far ahead of me in terms of knowledge or experimentation that I take more from here than I can ever hope to give.

A library is still valuable, even if none of the visitors have ever published a book!

Lurker... At least I learn a new word.

If you think about it, the thread is a celebration of lurkers. There are generally ten flys-on-the-wall for every member signed in.

All Dark — The term predates .html, despite what https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/rules-of-the-internet might say.

The full catch-phrase was https://duckduckgo.com/?q=%22lurkers+support+me+in+email

edit:
Found this. Enjoy

The Lurkers Support Me in E-mail
(To the tune of "My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean")

By Jo Walton
The lurkers support me in email
They all think I'm great don't you know.
You posters just don't understand me
But soon you will reap what you sow.

Lurkers, lurkers, lurkers support me, you'll see, you'll see
off in e-mail the lurkers support me, you'll see.

Oh it's true, and you know they support me.
There's thousands of lurkers out there!
They all understand my intentions
you posters are not being fair!

Lurkers, lurkers, lurkers support me, you'll see, you'll see
off in e-mail the lurkers support me, you'll see

The lurkers support me in email
"So why don't they post?" you all cry
They're scared of your hostile intentions
they're not as courageous as I.

Lurkers, lurkers, lurkers support me, you'll see, you'll see
off in e-mail the lurkers support me, you'll see
....

Most threads I'm merely lurking. It's what you do until you've got something substantive or humorous to share.

When I start a new interest and join a forum, much of my initial time is simply learning the lingo and basic concepts.

All Darc 01-03-2020 10:05 AM

How could we know if lurkers likes or hate what we write?

redpoint5 01-03-2020 11:05 AM

Doesn't matter; speak truthfully.

Then there's the "thanks" button, which I often use if a post made me laugh, think, corrected an error of mine, speaks a great truth, or even contradicts with my views but is given honestly and in good faith.

An unwritten rule is don't say anything you wouldn't want your mom/probation officer to see.

This is an interesting tangent topic.

The legal system (it is not a justice system) is designed to disproportionately harm those who are both technically guilty of violating the law, and speak truthfully. If someone denies wrongdoing yet is still found guilty, they often face less severe consequences as there is some doubt they have introduced as to their culpability. On the other hand, someone confessing is given the maximum punishment since that is in the interest of the prosecutor; to assign guilt and seek maximum punishment.

Fortunately in the US, we have the right to remain silent, so that at least provides a way to not speak falsely while not sacrificing oneself to the legal system.

I'm not advocating breaking the law in general, but when this country finally corrupts their best acknowledgement of inalienable rights; the right to freedom of speech, our duty will be to insist on maintaining it.

People can be quite worse dictator than the state.

What we see today called as murder of reputation, made by people on web when someone says something people don't like, even when it's true, shows how people are worse than state.
Today everything, or nearly everthing offends someone somewhere...

Most people are animals. If they were in charge of create & apply laws they would be far worse than the actual system.

It goes both ways, and there is no clearly better form of government, though absolute power does tend to corrupt. Power corrupts even when it's shared by multiple people/groups.

I have absolute power over my child, who is essentially a slave. Did that corrupt me? If people keep proper perspective; that power brings equal measures of responsibility, then they would not abuse it. Instead we're led to believe that power brings with it self-gratification, which isn't the purpose of power.

I'd much rather be ruled by a benevolent and wise dictator than a collection of selfish idiots.

For how long do benevolent and wise dictators stay benevolent and wise?

freebeard 01-04-2020 11:59 AM

No more than one lifetime per each.
