Has anyone interfaced the infotainment screen for DIY instrumentation?

One thing I hate about modern vehicles is they are so cluttered. Adding anything extra looks odd and usually takes up space dedicated for something else. This becomes more of a problem the more gauges and such that you want to add.

But then there's this big ol' screen or two (or three) in every car built from 2020 (or was it 2015 or so?) forward.

So instead of having a screen with stuff I don't really care about, is there a way to interface it and put what I want on it?

One thing that I'd like for fuel economy is something that tells me my brake specific fuel consumption or my engine efficiency. I'm sure that can all be done in software since cars these days know how much fuel they're using and how much power they are outputting.

Well, that and wouldn't it be neat if I could have several radios in my car (Ham HF, Ham VHF/UHF, GMRS, CB, MURS) and have a screen that controls all of them?

Jun 27, 2025The DIY solution I ended up with involves using a Raspberry Pi configured to act as a wireless bridge between my phone and the car's infotainment system.

Yes there is a way to interface, suspect it will be convoluted because the base software and operating system is optimized for the stuff it displayes currently. That means you need to learn how and where to inject then display your display of data.
The guy that uses the raspberry pi knows how. Ask.

How good are you at reading and programming in obscure assembly languages? The difference is syntax and command names you won't know.

Can you acquire the data tranfer and pinout information for the chipset? The aftermarket people will have pinouts.

Eventually some geek will want to this, probably for the same reason. Waiting IS
