Has someone tried base bleed?

Hey guys,

There are a number of intriguing papers about the "base bleed" mod to increase fuel efficiency like :

2012, Optimum Way to Increase the Fuel Efficiency of the Car Using Base Bleed,

2018, Reduction of Aerodynamic Drag Force for Reducing Fuel Consumption in Road Vehicle using Basebleed

2016, DESIGN AND ANALYSIS OF CONVERGENT BASE BLEED IN AUTOMOTIVE STRUCTURE

Ever heard of this mod? Anybody did something like that?

I want to install a belly pan on my 99 Acura EL (same as Civic Ex sedan in US) and should this mod be worth, it would have to be installed before the undertray.

Facts and opinions will all be welcomed.

If you can get a belly pan for a 20 year old car definitely go for it.

Automotive base bleed a.k.a. running a duct(s) from a higher pressure area to the back to "fill" the trailing wake. It has been discussed. IMHO if you have the excess space in the vehicle envelope for ducts, you could chop the top and do even better because ducts have their own drag. But what do I know; I haven't tested it and aero ducts in other places are enjoying some popularity.

Exactly what I would say. I would add that other aero ducts, at least on production cars, tend to be small and short--i.e. air curtain ducts, brake cooling ducts, differential cooler ducts, radiator ducts. As far as I know base bleed has never been implemented on anything outside of some concept cars and wind tunnel test models (but if I'm wrong, I would be curious to see some examples!).

Aston Martin did something similar with their Aeroblade on the DB11, but that's an aerodynamic spoiler--the duct outlet is sited at the base of the rear window and exhausts normal to the surface. I don't know where the intakes are.

There are no low-drag cars that use it.My opinion is to ignore it.For any infinitesimal gain you might achieve,it would cost you a fortune to develop it.

aerohead is usually right. That said, my favorite examples:

Golf GTI W12-650

The ducting needs to be generously sized. Dryer vent ducting won't cut it. Close, but no cigar:
