have some questions about a vx or hx swap
 

i have a few questions regarding a vx or hx swap on a standard dx,lx,ex civic.

i have located a few civics year range of 96-99 near me and i am considering either swaping in an hx or possibily a vx transmission. would a transmission swap be something that a typical transmission shop would be able to perform?, or would a full motor+transmission be easier to have someone perform? or possibly is a swap of this sort something that you would have to have a specialist with experience in this area perform?

You could easily do it yourself, I should think, but the transmission shouldn't add any difficulty, it's the same housing just different guts.

a tranny swap should be a piece of cake for a shop. Most Honda's by far the easiest cars to work on. I'm swapping my tranny from a ex(short gear) to a vx tranny and one of my friends said he would do it for $50, worth it for me to not get dirty, lol.

And If you want to really push the mpg envelope it would probably be cheaper to just start out with a Hx since you are looking for a 96+ year civic.

as far as expense i am currently near the atlanta area so i have a few 96+ civics located that would be less expensive with an hx transmission swap figured in. do you have any experience as what could be expected in terms of mpg gain from the hx transmission in an dx/lx/ex? i gathered @ a 4-6mpg increase? they are cars that would need a transmission anyway so i thought i would research the pros and cons of the hx transmission being swapped in, i've also gathered that the hx automatic transmission is very prone to failure os i suppose i will go with the manual, i am not certain about the vx however.
