Have you heard about Peak Oil?

Boreas 01-09-2011 07:57 PM

It's kind of scary isn't it, with china and india's energy demands increasing too.

gone-ot 01-09-2011 09:00 PM

...I thought PEAK OIL was a lubricant being hocked by that cute Indy-car driver, Danca-something (wink, wink)!!!

The Rooster 01-09-2011 09:14 PM

LOL;

"Hydrogen has about as much potential to power our economy as unicorn tears do."

autoteach 01-09-2011 09:24 PM

Ok, I get the potential for unicorn tears. But the question is, how do we harvest them?

The Rooster 01-09-2011 10:17 PM

Pull really hard on the "corn", that'll make em cry.

Thymeclock 01-09-2011 10:41 PM

It’s a clever propaganda piece to make the political Right wing look stupid.

It’s a beautiful ‘red herring’ (if you enjoy herring).

Q: Want to know what causes ‘peak oil’ ?

A: Supply and demand.

Q: Guess who controls most of the world’s supply of oil?

A: OPEC

Q: What is OPEC?

A: An international cartel.

Q: What is a cartel?

A: A combination of independent commercial enterprises or nations to limit competition.

Q: Guess what happened in the 1970’s when OPEC refused to increase production?

A: Oil shortages.

Q: Why did they do it?

A: To drive prices UP (among other things).

Q: Guess who founded OPEC?

A: A Socialist from a South American country.

Rómulo Betancourt - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Q: Can you guess which country? (Hint: It’s a member of OPEC.)

*****

Of course the propagandistic cartoon video won't mention any of these things. The primary purpose of the cartoon video is political, including that of denouncing Fox News, which it mentions by name.

Do you believe everything you hear in a cartoon video?

Is America to blame for what OPEC does?

Don’t you just LOVE OPEC?

Don’t you wish you could have your own cartel and control the world?

gone-ot 01-09-2011 10:51 PM

...you mean to tell me that OPEC isn't an acronym for Other People Enjoying (our) Cash?

What I wish is if you weren't such a broken record. If you have data and not mud/conspiracy theories, then bring it.

The question is about peak oil.

Your request is denied. If you don't like what I post, then don't read it. No one is forcing you to read it.

Interesting how the opposition always is the first to mention the word "conspiracy". Where was anything said about a conspiracy in this thread? Or is that just a hot button buzzword of the Left that is triggered automatically?

Lack of tolerance for disagreement is the hallmark of authoritarianism.

dcb 01-09-2011 11:28 PM

your dependency on labels is repulsive.

brucey 01-09-2011 11:36 PM

Welllllll I thought the video was cute. I've been seeing a lot of style pop up lately.

Frank Lee 01-10-2011 12:04 AM

I didn't agree with all of it but it still made me laugh my arse off

dcb 01-10-2011 12:31 AM

I did finally watch it, low on supporting evidence and high on politics like tyme said originally (before he got political himself). I dunno, this gifford thing, and frothing from both sides, really kinda makes me want to re-evaluate anything with divisive language in it.

The Rooster 01-10-2011 12:56 AM

I hate rich people.

vacationtime247 01-10-2011 01:19 AM

I believed every word of it. Now, to go watch Fox News and get the rest of the story.

I'll look forward to watching the video, sounds funny. Unfortunately my boss (who plays online poker at work) has decided to cut off You-tube from the same place...

Thanks for the clarification. I'd hate to see this thread descend into uninformed, angry bickering.

I didn't watch the video, and I tend not to watch videos that aren't accompanied by a paragraph describing them. Text (with citations!) is a much better format for any serious argument.

Oil is finite. By definition, there is a peak.

We passed worldwide oil discovery in 1965 or 1966. The fact that we are even considering using the so-called oil sands is proof that we are getting a little desperate...

Meanwhile, the BP oil pipeline in Alaska was leaking, again:

There's estimated about 400,000,000,000 barrels of oil in the Bakken Formation under the Dakotas. At a constant import rate of 14,000,000 barrels of oil per day, the Us could enjoy about 78 years of oil from this source.

NeilBlanchard 01-10-2011 10:42 AM

A whole 78 years?! Let's see if we can use it up faster!!!

menaus2 01-10-2011 11:22 AM

Sure there could be TONS of oil out there, but considering exploding demand and the increasing cost of extraction per barrel it's getting increasingly uneconomical... Fun times we're living in eh?

t vago 01-10-2011 11:25 AM

I dunno... It became economical to extract oil from shale back in 2007.

We are talking about 400,000,000,000 barrels of oil. At $90 per barrel, that's about $36,000 TRILLION dollars. If it were taxed at 10%, that's enough to pay off the national debt completely, I think.

Frank Lee 01-10-2011 12:37 PM

The thread is starting to remind me of when drilling ANWR was all the rage. The SUV/righty tighty crowd thought that sinking some pipes in there would allow them to drive all over creation for the rest of their lives at 97 cents/gallon. Then I rained on their parade with the best available estimates of the size of the reserves vs. U.S. consumption.

As usual Neil, the professional activist, is running his mouth and displaying his ignorance. The last time we heard this "we are running out of oil" nonsense was in the 1970's; the Leftist activists began crying that 'the sky is falling!' - just as they are doing again now.

"Peak oil is often confused with oil depletion; peak oil is the point of maximum production while depletion refers to a period of falling reserves and supply."

I would suggest everyone read this link rather than get their information from a biased cartoon video:
Peak oil - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As expected, Neil would like to give the phrase a different meaning to keep you ignorant and promote his ideology.

I'd say you crossed the line into personal attacks.

Remember, thymeclock, it's never okay to directly describe somebody negatively.

However, you can imply it all you want, because that's okay. "FauxNoise," anyone?

Frank Lee 01-10-2011 01:39 PM

Is Fauxnoise a person posting here?

gone-ot 01-10-2011 01:40 PM

...kick the **** out of the facts and figures all you want, but please "no shooting" of the messengers!

MetroMPG 01-10-2011 02:01 PM

I'll echo that - no getting personal please.

And I'll bet a unicorn's tear duct that nothing useful will come of this thread. And so with the lightning reflexes of an OPEC minister adjusting production output... thread locked!

Hey, here's an idea... Let's talk about improving vehicle efficiency (or driving efficiency) instead of politics!

EDIT...

PS., arragonis, this authoritarian forum admin thanks you for the chuckle :D
