"Blast" from the Past, 1932 Or perhaps something more rakish from '55? http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r...r/prop_car.jpg |
Now just imagine the current turboprop engines available, or better yet, a ducted fan unit to make sure that noone gets chopped up. lol Actually, another interesting flashback would be turbines, or even a diesel rotary. Imagine the torque in a rotary small package...hmmmm

Looks like an effective way to prevent tail gaters :p

Don't know if you've ever taxied a small plane, but it's pretty hard to do fine speed control with a prop, especially from a dead stop. There's not really a direct throttle/thrust relation, so you wind up giving a good blast to start rolling, then immediately coming off the throttle so you don't keep accelerating.

Yeah, I have my Commercial Multi-Engine License and appreciate controlling props.
It appears props in general have a max efficiency of about 85%, and outside of optimal operating parameters that efficiency drops like a rock. And, as a general rule of thumb, I understand transmissions are about 85% efficient as well. This is just one small reason why we don't see too many prop cars! |
