Hello from Denmark

Greetings from Denmark :)

Since starting my moonligting activities years ago doing engine management on Honda´s, I quickly found out about the 1996-- Honda EK3 and its amazing fuel economy. Always thinking: If only I could convince someone to do an EK3 turbo, combining mileage with +50% power and torque. I never succeeded, the only few customers trying turbo failed miserably with their Ebay T3 china kits, sigh.

Spool forward to late 2012. Bought an Ek3 myself, and now in 2014 the turbo is getting installed, yeah :)

Getting 35-45 MPG now running my own program (OBD1, eCtune) even at stoich AFR 14.7. Maybe also thanks to some new and more efficient injectors, but who knows.

Interestingly the original Honda ECU does AFR ~22 at lean-burn up to around 120 km/h. After that it quickly runs amok and goes pig rich.

DSM T25 getting installed and tuned tomorrow if all goes well. After that: careful tuning a lean fuel map, closed-looping off an LSU 4.9 wideband. Crossing fingers it doesen´t blow up :)

Other cars: Still have a couple of CRX 1.6 1986, one a turbo racecar for trackdays. Turbo setup for the EK3 is basically cloned from here. :)
Also had a Calibra Turbo, E46, VXR220 at some point.

I´d be interested to see if I could find some inspiration here in regards to ignition timing or other tips. Looking for that holy grail... turbo power and 50MPG!

"Mista Bone" and "pgfpro" are two Honda pros here who have done some seriously good work with the D series Honda engines in early to mid 1990s models.

Welcome to the site. That sounds like a great project. I can't wait to hear more.

Thanks guys, I´ll keep you posted.
So far the thing I seem to have confirmed (I had my suspicions) is that the hypermileage abilities of the D15Z6 (and likely D15Z1) likely comes from the engine itself. Running it super lean is just sugar on top, really... judging from my MPG running stoich.
Seemingly the combustion chamber is stupidly efficient. For example, when adjusting fuel tables you can hardly feel the difference between AFR12 and AFR22.
A side effect of all this is that we´ll probably be tuning a couple of unmodified EK3´s also. During the 2-3 weeks I have been using my own program to tune part throttle, I find the car more or less transformed and not "quirky" to drive any more.
Anyway, I´ll happily share fuel/ignition tables if anyone wants them. Still not sure on how much timing to run @ super lean, though. Any tips on how to reliably read actual ignition timing during part-throttle on an unmodified car are quite welcome :)

So far 32MPG on that very first tank of gas with the turbo, including various tuning and silly accelerations, driving to work etc.
Complete tuning is problematic right now though, as the stock MAP sensor goes to barely 7 PSI (normally they go to 8-10PSI) so it maxes out at full throttle. 2.5 bar MAP sensor is on the way.

Get startet on a fuel log here, so we can follow your progress.

Velkommen i øvrigt din tosse :) (lige som os andre)

Hmmm fuel log, I might do that once everything is dialed in.

(Og hej til den jydske Master EcoModder :))
