Hello Guys and Gals!
First I want to thank SVoboy and MetroMPG for creating this awesome site. Also for everyone else contributing. I've been reading this site for a few weeks and enjoying the insights - no pun intended for my friends driving the car :)
I recently bought CA version VX and am looking to double the 27-28 mpg I got with my Maxima! I just filled up a couple days ago so don't know what I'm working with yet but hopefully it's at least in the mid 40's range. |
Well, you're on the right track, and as you get to know it better the numbers are going to get even better.
Welcome! |
Add your car to the garage, and make sure you're tracking the mileage on your fuel log. There are plenty of threads that will be immediately helpful.
Is yours an automatic or manual? It'll make a big difference in which mods/driving habits will get the most returns on mpgs |
Just added the car to the garage. It's definitely a manual!
I'm going to get it back to stock condition with new tires, tune up, some new suspension parts. Once I'm satisfied with that, I will begin working on increasing the fuel efficiency. After driving 6cyl Nissans for the last 15 years, I'm really excited about this project! |
Cool, now here's your first tip:
If you don't run your AC all the time, you can get immediately gain about 5-8 mpg by "engine-off coasting" up to all stop lights and stop signs. #1 - As soon as you see you're going to have to stop, let your foot off the gas, throw it in neutral and key it off. #2 - Your power brakes are good for about two pumps before they stiffen up, so ease onto the brake pedal in one long, continuous light braking action until you roll to a stop. #3 - Key it back on when the light changes. |
Belated welcome, 94VX.
What prompted the change from the Nissan V6 world? |
Thanks for the tip 'cowmeat'. I used to do that with my Maxima, but then I figured it wasn't worth it to use the starter so much. I want to see what kind of numbers I get just driving normally first, then I'll start using the hypermill techniques along with the mpguino.
I've had 4 Maxima's already and they're great cars but I became interested in FE a few years ago and have wanted a small 4cyl Honda for a while...so here I am. I finally finished off my first tank on the VX after doing mostly short trips of 2-5 miles in the city and I got 310 miles on exactly 8 gallons for a mpg of 38.75 I suppose that isn't too bad considering the shape the car was in when I got it and it's also a CA model. I just did an alignment myself and will also pump the tire pressure up to 45 and see if I can squeeze 40mpg + out of it next tank. |
