A Henderson Nevada Geo Metro

Hello. My goal is to average 60+ MPG with the air conditioning ON. Summertime temps are an easy 110+ degrees here in Nevada, and AC is almost a necessity. I plan on an extra deep cycle battery for the blower fan, extra cabin insulation, and to eventually power the compressor electrically from lithium polymer battery packs.

Welcome! And that sounds like a bulletproof plan. Goodness knows i would run my AC all the time if it ran on an electric pump. I turn mine on once a year just to make sure it still works for the rare times i have a passenger.

Welcome!
Nice job on your mileage and recent huge improvement. Keep it up.
Keep us posted on your AC endeavors.

Lithium batteries do not like heat.

You are correct! I run them in my RC Helis and often put them in the fridge between charges.

NICE ride, I love your mods.

I see some of the stuff you've done with your little hoopy is appearance-oriented, are you willing to cover some of that up to improve your aero? There's low-hanging fruit with wheel skirts and belly pan mods, for instance.

I also see you have blackout window tint, would silver tint do a better job of rejecting heat to lighten the load on your AC?

Altough a 12-volt electric-driven compressor for the air-conditioneer is not impossible to get, you could also consider some options with a lower energy consumption such as some sort of heat pump, or maybe evaporative cooling could do the trick.

sheepdog 44 06-06-2014 08:35 PM

I just had a wonderful thought imagining plugging into a 120volt socket while the car was parked and pre-conditioning the car for cents. At work, people like to occasionally sit in their car during lunch and listen to the radio. To do that, you need to start your engine and let it idle for the half hour lunch. What a waste when electricity is so cheap!
