Hey

Just wanted to say hi to everyone. I came here looking to up my gas mileage just like everyone else. Its especially important to me because i pack in about 90-100 miles every day commuting to/from my co-op job (still a college kid), etc

Im driving a '98 Cavalier, and i do mostly highway driving. Id appreciate any help I could get, especially with gas prices now

Welcome to ecomodder! Where are you studying?

Welcome to the site. Driving techniques will be your first thing to look at as they'll give you the largest increase in mileage. After that, I would look into aero mods. What kind of mileage are you getting right now?

Im studying Materials Enigneering at Drexel University in Philadelphia. I live close to there on the S. Jersey side. My internship is in Trenton though, so its a good 40 miles away.

Before checking out this site(up until about a week ago) I was getting about 26-28 mpg, mostly highway. Thats with a lead foot. Starting with this tank of gas, I started coasting in neutral alot more (its a automatic so im somewhat limited) and I lowered my avg highway speed down from 70-75 to 55-60. Its a work in progress, but no results yet as i havent filled up again. The more i read, the more i wanna go out and try more techiniques, and with the amount of driving i do, I know itll turn into real savings soon

Do you have a particular MPG goal?

With those two changes, I'm betting you'll be really pleased with your next fill up. Coasting/mimimizing braking and highway speed reduction are two of the biggies.

I second Daox's comment: for someone who drives mostly freeway, head to the aero forum and check out the sticky threads.

And welcome to the site!

I live in Pennsauken so yea were pretty close. I havent looked into a scangague yet but Im going to. Im actually on the roller hockey team.

Im considering public transportation but id have to get a bike (probably a smart investment anyway). The real problem is that the neighborhood that it would dump me out into sucks, so im weighing potentially huge money savings against my wellbeing. Im sure gas will hit a certain price where ill being willing to risk it. In the meantime, im trying to squeeze every mile out of gas that i can.

As far as an mpg target goes, im relatively new to this, so im gonna say 40.. that seems doable from the browsing around ive been doing, but if i can do better, then awesome  i guess ill have a better grasp after the next few fillups

Welcome DP. I've got two Cavaliers, a 98 auto and an 02 5spd, both are 2200's. I could hit 42mpg highway on pure gasoline way back when I drove the auto, now my sister does. The 02, I'm just starting now to cross into the 40's after engine mods. I blame ethanol.

What engine/trans do you have?
