Hi all.

I'm just going to quickly introduce myself. My name's Dean and figured I'd join up. I have a 98 Civic GLi 1.6L. Haven't really done much at all to it, except for a new intake and extractors. Had it down to 5.1L per 100k on the highway, so 46MPG sitting at around 110kmh or 68MPH. In the city it's around 7.7L per 100k, so 30.5MPG. So both figures are better than the EPA rating. Oh and being in Australia a lot of the highway driving is with aircon So if I did without I'd imagine I'd be more efficient.

I'm planning on a long trip come June, at about 8000k's or nearly 5000 miles so I'll log book the whole thing for fuel consumption. If anyone has any tips on how I go about it, that would be awesome. Thanks!:p

Welcome, how are you gauging your mileage?

p3anut 05-19-2009 11:12 PM

Dodgily :p Afaik the Aus Civics from then are ODB1 so no scangauge. So I'm filling to the brim, driving xxx distance then seeing how much fuel it takes to fill again then working it out from there. Best I can do :(

UfoTofU 05-19-2009 11:49 PM

No frowns because you're doing well nonetheless

p3anut 05-19-2009 11:51 PM

Thanks mate. Have to make do with what I have on hand, us uni students aren't made of money! :D

UfoTofU 05-19-2009 11:54 PM

No, we aren't :D

p3anut 05-19-2009 11:56 PM

Although hopefully after uni, things will change lol.

UfoTofU 05-20-2009 12:57 AM

When will you finish?

p3anut 05-20-2009 01:00 AM

Pretty much four years, only just started Primary Education. How about you?

UfoTofU 05-20-2009 01:20 AM

I have no idea. I think I'll get licensing in teaching and teach high school

p3anut 05-20-2009 01:21 AM

High school, ouch :P Teenagers would drive me insane!

UfoTofU 05-20-2009 02:03 AM

I feel like teaching college is serious business

p3anut 05-21-2009 09:35 PM

I guess it is :P Can't wait to be done with it all though!

UfoTofU 05-21-2009 09:42 PM

I can't believe I'm planning to teach

p3anut 05-21-2009 09:44 PM

I'm the same, it was the last thing I figured I'd do. Only even decided on it early this year!

UfoTofU 05-21-2009 09:48 PM

What are you planning to teach?

p3anut 05-21-2009 09:50 PM

Just an everyday Primary classroom teacher. Don't really know if I'd want to specialise in anything. Maybe IT or something. How about you?

UfoTofU 05-21-2009 10:10 PM

Science, the reason why I can't believe I'm teaching is because I wasn't an effective tutor

p3anut 05-21-2009 10:37 PM

How come you chose to do teaching then? If you don't mind me asking :)

UfoTofU 05-21-2009 10:53 PM

Family

p3anut 05-24-2009 08:39 PM

Fair enough.

MetroMPG 05-27-2009 04:27 PM

Hi p3anut - welcome to the forum.

Have you seen the MPGuino? You can get MPG instrumentation for your non-OBDII car in a pre-built kit or build your own DIY style on the cheap if you can solder/follow instructions.

For a highway trip, you know what people are going to tell you: keep the speed down, and aeromods, aeromods, aeromods. :)

p3anut 06-01-2009 11:44 PM

I read about the MPGuino. Tempted. :-P Speaking of aeromods, anyone reckon slightly lowering my car would help economy much?

MetroMPG 06-01-2009 11:50 PM

Define "much". :)

Lowering is a common trick automakers use when they produce "eco" versions of existing vehicle models.

Lexus claimed a .01 reduction in Cd when their big sedan was lowered 1 inch.

You can see the estimated fuel savings of Cd -0.01 if you use our calculator: Aerodynamic & rolling resistance, power & MPG calculator - EcoModder.com

UfoTofU 06-02-2009 12:30 AM

Mod your driving

p3anut 06-13-2009 06:02 AM

Well, I'm tempted to lower it for asthetics too. So maybe :P Although that would be kinda ricey so I may give it a miss. I've taken the rear seats and sub out since I'll need the room when I'm away travelling. Even that (maybe 20kg at the most) made a slight improvement to economy. I've been trying to drive more economically too, although it's only just here in the city until I go next Monday.
