Hello To All

Hi there guys, I am so glad to have run into your site by total accident. I own a 2004 Vibe and I have 54 mile one way highway commute every day for work.

Making my car more efficient has been a goal of mine since I began this job and you guys, this site, will be a tremendous resource to help me accomplish a realistic goal for my commute.

Hopefully my findings, and my resources to part manufacturers can not only help me but assist you guys in achieving the unbelievable results I see post after post. Keep up the good fight, people are watching.

Hello and welcome to EM. The Vibe is a great car for a combo of mileage and utility. As you can see in my sig I have a Matrix. You can definitly pull those numbers into the mid 30s simply using better driving techniques. After that it sounds like aerodynamic mods are going to be your best bet as you travel so far (highway I assume) each day.

For some time the car served as almost a pickup truck, it was awesome. Now its my commuter car going 51.4 miles each way to work on a very busy stretch of I-95. As I learn what speed is best for hwy use and won't get me shot I am watching the MPG's go up consistently.

Next up it removing the roof rack and mudflaps, after this tank. Then it's interior gutting time, since I drive alone always in this car.

Then I have an excuse to lower it, perhaps make those fender skirts and fine tuning my driving. My goal is to reach 40mpg, but hell if I can get to 50 then I would use 2 gallons a day .... whoo hoo ...

Thanks again, I will likely monitor your thread to see the progress you're making with the Matrix ...

You guys rock !!

Welcome to EM! Just remember to slow down, keep a steady throttle on the flat parts of the freeway, drive with load, and if you really want to, drive barefoot! Seriously, you'd be surprised how much more little things done to the throttle can do to the mpg's, so slip off the shoes and cool your feet!

Also, the roof-rack removal will help, although I doubt you'll be able to tell the difference (I didn't) and the mudflap removal will help the most!

Don't forget instrumentation, if you can get it, that'd be the easiest way to help improve your driving style, inflate your tires to max sidewall, and use less brakes. Throw it in neutral at red-lights, (be sure that it engages Drive first before stepping on the gas when the light turns green!) and drive when you know the engine will warm up. Running the o2 sensors in open loop is like driving with a faulty o2 sensor until it's warmed! Happy hypermileing!
