Compressing/storing woodgas/H2/methane

Here's something i've wondered...

Woodgas/producer gas just like biomethane or perhaps hydrogen from algae or something.. can be made for instance on a farm, but making it "realtime" to work on a vehicle tends to be difficult while also having some drivability issues. Has anyone done experiments trying to store it whether in repurposed propane tanks, or CNG tanks, or similar so that you can just "start and go" off stored gas while more safely bulk-making the gas and storing for convenience? (rather than having a flaming gasifier hanging off the back of your pickup potentially leaking carbon monoxide) To me it would seem any "fuelgas" should be relatively similar, you either store compressed or liquified, and there should be some way to standardize information on suitable tanks, pressures to use, industrial welding gas compressors maybe to put it in your tanks and similar which would all let you fuel off whatever you're able to produce off grid.
