Hit by a deer
I thought that slowing down would have other benefits besides impro..ved FE. I assumed (bad assumption) that slowing down would make the drive to work safer from a deer/car impact point of veiw, and intruth I didn't hit a deer. The deer hit me. I could hit a deer when I was driving a 1996 Cutlass Supreme, no I had to wait until I was driving a new car. He only did $1685.00 worth of damage. Should I factor that into my new downsized vehicle expenses. Oh, well, I'm sure it day was worse than mine.

Wow sorry to hear that. Did you at least get to keep the venison? Help defer some of the cost.:) Glad you are ok. |
Sorry to hear that. I lost a van to a large deer 5 years ago.
|
It happened to me to a couple years back. Jumped right in the driver's door. Left a pretty big bump on the door and fur on the side moldings. Anyway, you were lucky, had it jumped a fraction sooner it would have done a lot more dammage.

No, he was down when I got out of the car, but as I was looking the damage over he got up, one leg hanging loose and hobbeled into the woods, coyote bait, it's all national forest. That's the 3rd in 12 years. I was doing 47mph and thought at that speed I would have been able avoid them, wrong. homeworkhome53 __________________ |
They can hear the VW a mile away. So far in 270K, nock on wood no deer.
But I have hit two with the vette, first broke the driver's mirror and went over the top, the second broke the passenger headlight and went over the top. Good aerodynamics also shedds the deer. |
I've been seeing a lot of deer lately, saw one on the roadside tonite, and was glad it didn't decide to cross.
My friend had a close call in his geo metro convertible the other day. He was driving back home and he saw a whole bunch of deer running across the road. He didn't have time to stop, so he turned to the left at just the right time on accident and went in-between two of them. He was doing 55-60, he said he slowed down to about 45 after that and was watching very closely to the windshield for deer. They really need to make deer barriers or something. |
Thats funny, we actually saw a deer this past weekend with only three legs.
It was missing a front one and just barely hobbled across the road. So do you think it walked from Michigan to NJ? ;) |
I'd say this one only got as far as the first pack of coyotes, which around here would be less than a mile. Insurance approved the repair so it should be fixed soon.

DPoV - that's quite an image! :D
HWH - glad to hear that insurance is going to pick up the tab. Touch wood, I've never smacked one either, and I do a fair amount of rural driving. When I see deer on the roadside or in the edge of the bush, I honk. Repeatedly. Same if I see one cross ahead of me (I assume there will be a second, third, fourth...) If they turn to look at me, I also flash my lights. Normally, they run away. |
I think they should make hunting them less expensive. If it were cheaper I would hunt. Some states have ridiculous hunting restrictions, proper population control prevents disease and accidents. Tennessee in 2004 allowed farmers to shoot all they wanted because of crop damage.
|
I live in the Manistee National Forest which is hunted heavily during the season, but that really dosen't control them. I see from 10-40 every day on my 26 mile drive to work. I've only hit 3 in 12 years, but had many close calls. Just part of living here. Certain times of the year are worse than others, spring and fall being the worst for deer movement. The Auto Insurance companies sued the state of Michigan a few years ago to reduce the number of deer. They wanted the deer population reduced by 1 million deer. They issued a bunch of extra permits, but it's only temperary. They breed like rabbits. And the deer hunters have a stonger lobby than the auto insurance companies.

I don't know if it's a real law, but all my hunting buds say it is so I just go by what they say. But I think in IL You don't have to have any deer tags to hunt if it's on private property. See a deer in your backyard? just pull out the shotgun and shoot 'em from the porch! I'm not sure though, seeing as anything basically goes here because all the local cops don't really care as long as your not trespassing onto other people's property. They just ask what your doing and who's land you are on. Then on they go. Same with fishing.

It almost looked as if it was surgically removed. Dont know how that would have happened, just a very lucky deer. |
In Michigan you need a tag, but landowners can get extras nocharge for deer damage. That doesn't mean they alway wait for a tag. there are always poachers.

Just a quick tip:
When you see a deer standing on the side of the road or just crossed it, watch out for his buddies! Deer are pack animals! They often are in a group of 3 to 5. Look out for the others! The only time I hit a deer was at 23 mph. I think he hit me harder than I hit him. Good enough reason for me to drive a $500 car. I CAN'T take $1000 worth of damage! |
Last year I nearly flipped my truck swerving to miss one. He was on the shoulder, ran into my path running right to left..OUT running left to right and then BACK into my path right to left. Accident avoidance in a 2wd truck that mazda decided to put 4x4 supension on and call a dual sport is a bit scary. Every time I had to swerve I almost flipped over, even had a rollover warning on both sunvisors AND in the glove compartment.
When I was a kid I was riding my atv on a dirt road, a deer jumped over the top of me, almost kicked me in the head. Surprisingly I didn't need an underwear change. |
Ugh...deer are awful where I live. We need more hunters here to thin them out! Anyway, last year I had to deal with slamming into a deer at 45 mph and grapefruit sized hail all in the same week. I was going to get the damage the deer had done fixed until the hail hit. The hail totaled out the car. I was bummed b/c I liked that 2000 Honda Civic Si a lot.
