Hiyooooohhh!!!!!!
Hey, everyone! Just stopping by to say hello before I datamine the bejesus out of this place to figure out how to improve the mpg (and maybe even the hp) on my '00 VW Bug. I just bought it last week, with 74K on it and I was finally able to do an mpg test this weekend. I was really rather shocked that it only came in at around 24 mpg! My Neon Sport got better gas mileage than that with 35 more hp.
But my Neon is gone. It would have cost me $3000 to make it worth $2000. So I traded it in for this amazing, adorable Bug with HUGE attitude, but also possibly scary low mpg. |

Welcome to EM!
Believe it or not, the bug has some aerodynamic problems at highway speeds -- the best way to save out the box is to keep the highway speed below 60 MPH. Mr. Mullet's link is a great place to start. BTW, what kind of engine and transmission? If you're into extreme mods, a spoiler can be made to improve highway MPG: http://ecomodder.com/forum/attachmen...4&d=1212290728 Enjoy the site, and... Attachment 1727 and welcome to EM! (RH77 beat me to the following) There is a famous diesel VW with a special aero-spoiler on it that has been discussed here ... googling ... here it is! Welcome to www.max-mpg.com http://www.max-mpg.com/images/thb4-22a.jpg CarloSW2 |
Thanks RH. Not sure if I want to alter the looks of my bug with Angel Wings ... Seems like the stock spoiler, or an after market spoiler like I saw on this one Bug recently that looks like someone crossbread a Trans Am with a Beetle should be sufficient.
But to answer your question, I got the stock 2.0l auto. I know they make chips to plug into trucks of all kinds to fine tune every aspect of performance. I was hoping to find something like that for my Bug. Or maybe someone that has used the K&N air & oil filters and can tell me straight up how well they work. |
Quickly scaned his site. Impressive numbers ...
There is one ting you have to remember about diesel vs. gasoline and that is that it is all about the hp. Any TDI VW (Bug, Jetta, etc.) is only 90 hp. and gets as much as 50 mpg. But, if you made the same engine run on gasoline, with turbo, you would get almost the exact same results. Quote:

Welcome chaz1138! I've got a '99 2.0 auto also. Just by slowing down to 65 or lower my avg mpg went over 30. I've been looking for the right rear wing, but I'm reluctant to drop $300+ on one.
