Honda Civic 08 or VW Jetta 2.5

I currently own 2.2 Cavalier Auto.
I started to drive conservatively 2 years ago mainly because I joined school. I was not hypermiling but driving smartly and not braking excessively. Always posted speed but acceleration smoothly, around 2000 rpm.

I was surprised to see that I was fueling less often. I was driving around 500km on tank of fuel (mostly city)

And now I get 32 to 35.

Now it is time to get a new car. I wont be actively hypermiling but still want decent MPG.

I would like to know what people can get out of Jetta 2.5 (manual).
I would be happy if i can get what i can get with Cavalier.

Else I might go with Honda Civic. :-(

I don't know what type of driving you do but if you can use a bike or public transportation for most of your short trips and need a car for long trips, get a Jetta TDI (1.9 manual). A used diesel Jetta will get 45 mpg or higher even when driven hard.

I can't speak to the gas Jetta but you should be able to find some if you look over the members' mileage list (garage) on this site.

Gas Jettas aren't all that good for mileage. I only started getting good numbers once I started hypermiling.

Gas civics on the other hand are great for mileage. I'd go with the civic, or find a TDI. Don't mess with the 2.5 Jetta.

I don't know why VW even uses the 5 cylinder. The best way I heard it described is it has the power of a 4 cylinder and the fuel economy of a 6. And VW reliability is not anywhere close to that of Honda. Honda is objectively the better choice for most people.
