Honda Civic flow visualization (sixth gen 1996-2000 hatch)

I searched quickly here and do not see this video, and I think owners of the 1992-1995 Civic hatches, like the legendary fuel sipper the VX, will appreciate it. Though it is a 1996-2000 model, the vehicle is broadly similar. It's also just a cool vid:

Btw, at the end of the vid he calls this a fifth gen Civic, and he is of course not correct. But so what!

Excellent find!

All I could do while watching it was draw the template out in my mind and think, "it needs a boat tail!":D

In a few of the episodes, especially the last, 8 or 9 I think, he calls for people to send him models to test. If we had a way to send him one on behalf of "ecomodder" ... is there a boattail model, or anything that would demonstrate some of the principles?

We should send him the Aerocivic.

Although, how do we know these results are accurate? I didn't go and watch his other videos, but if i recall correctly he'd have to have 400+mph wind in that tunnel to give reliable results for a model that size... it would probably take up his whole garage.

PS- if we really did want to send him one, I'm sure someone on here would be good enough at scale models to build one for him. We could set up a kickstarter to fund the ~$50 for a model, supplies and time through a few $1-5 donations.

Yes! Or a hobby model of a Gen 1 insight. I saw such a model once online. EDIT: maybe Daox could 3d print the Aerocivic.

The biggest, most easily acquired 1G Insight model is a 1/43rd scale by Ebbro, and they're not cheap. Apparently there is a super-ultra-rare "Ultraman" Insight in either 43rd or 32nd, but it's got a really ugly paint job and is probably not accurate.

I personally don't think it's really even worth sending him anything smaller than 1/24, but then again, it also doesn't make sense to aero test anything smaller than 1/4 scale.

Really? http://ecomodder.com/forum/showthrea...ies-31047.html

He prints out his own test pieces on a 3D printer. Most efficient would be if he sold the output from his printer and then tested it. But if it gets too easy the demand goes up and he won't do it anymore.

Have you watched enough to understand that the camera is upside down, pointed at an inverted model at the top of a water channel? The stray bubbles shooting downward give it away. This is actually a good match for the Reynolds number.

It will cost $50 to package and ship it in one piece. Good price point for a model 3D printed at the point of use though. I already have a 1/25th model I'd like to see him test:

I made it in 1995. It would need the windows filled in.

Well, I stand corrected freebeard. Thanks. I had searched on EM because I remembered it being here, but when I didn't find I figured I had bumped into it on my own on youtube or some other forum. I didn't find. And post 27 in that thread even features a link to the Civic Hatch I started this thread with. Oh well. Still would love to see a scaled version of the Aerocivic in his little tunnel, even though I love your modded bug. It would be fun too to send a scaled version of aerohead's pickup. He put that into a professional wind tunnel, so comparison data would be interesting.

His latest video is a 'making-of' type overview.
