Hello! New to the forum. I used to own a 1998 civic hx, but sold it. I just recently bought a bone stock 1996 Civic Hatchback Dx. Manual and no options besides AC. The only things I want to do with it is put hx wheels and a hx transmission in it. I also have another 96 civic hatchback but it will be about the opposite of the dx, with a supercharged d16y8. That just a little about me and my cars. Any tips for me to squeeze out a couple mpg's please chime in!

Hello and welcome! One idea would be to put a 1992-1995 VX or CX transmission in instead, since you are planning the swap. I think your 1996 DX *hatch* had the same final drive as the 1996-2000 HX (the DX coupes and sedans had shorter final drives). That means you already have the 3.725 and could with a just as simple bolt-on get the VX or CX trans an its 3.250 final drive. Gonna start a fuel log here at EM?

I had a hx transmission laying in the garage, but never looked into the gearing to see if its the same! I will start the search for the vx transmission then. I wanted vx wheels but my buddy has two sets of hx wheels so thats why i guess i will just go with them. I would also like to get a scan guage soon. I am a auto tech for a living, but have always been into performance so I am just doing a lot of reading for now. And yes I would like to start fuel log how do I go about it?

I also want to put a oem tach in the cluster.

Fuel log: first Add new vehicle to your garage. Then you'll be able to add fill ups.

The HX wheels may be a better choice since you'll be able to find LRR rubber in the 14 inch size much easier than 13. The OEM 14" tire from the 1st gen insight (Bridgestone RE92) is about as good as you can get in a fuel saving 14 inch tire. (http://ecomodder.com/forum/showthrea...e92-19126.html )

What type of driving do you do most? (City/hwy?) Regardless, a MPG display is crucial if you want to stretch it and make it more fun.

I drive 24 miles one way to work mostly expressway. I live on a highway so I turn directly on the highway and drive about 2 miles, then drive two miles through town at 30 mph an then hop on the expressway for the remaining 20 miles. My work is directly off the exit.

OK, so you'd benefit from the taller gearing. And aero mods.
