HORROR axle mod. (pics)
 

ive got a very tricky situation. i have a front wheel drive car and the rear axles arn't independant they are linked with the biggest, uglyist, unearodynamic beam ever. however i am sort of out of ideas how to improve it. ive made a sketch best describing it. i do not know how to mount anything to the plastic gas tank that will hold. it is very unevenly shaped and the brackets protrude quite a bit. i also dont know how much the axle moves up and down. i want to put a deflector on the axle but there is barely an inch between it and the axle if the suspension moves up all the way. anyone have some links to similar axle cover ups or deflectors will be greatly appriciated.

Considering it's tucked behind the gas tank, as is typical of most twist-beam axles, I wouldn't bother at all. A front air dam modification would make more sense and would have a bigger effect. NASCAR racers regularly hit over 200 mph with a big live axle hanging out the back end.

If you want to clean up aero back there, work on covering the area under the rear bumper, where air pushes into the big pocket formed by the inner surface of the bumper.

Don't touch the gas tank, close off the bottom of the beam and maybe extend a 'boattail' toward 'movement'.

thanks. my plan was to cover the bottom of the beam and maybe have an extra flap diverting the air downwards. what is not shown is that the spare wheel well sits just behind the axle again same level as the tank preventing a boat tail. the well sits flush with the bottom of the bumper there is not holes to cover there. the car comes with a decent airdam skirt to extend this will be easy.Attachment 16830

I think covering the cavity in the beam would be important. I put 'boattail' in single quotes, it really would be a flap. If the spare wheelwell is round on the front you could have a curved trailing edge.

Else look up Gurney flap.
