how do you fill up
sitting here reading along happily and thought i havent seen a thread on how you fill your tank. do you pump it until it is in the filler neck stop at the click, round up . shake the nozzle for every last drop?
my car you are suppose to stop at the click if you fill it into the neck the extra will run down the canister vent and into the canister where it ruins it. so i stop at the click and then give a couple of shakes to make sure i got everything i paid for. is there a method that could lead me to easier calculations? |
I pump it until it clicks then add another "click" of fuel.

I use the second notch on the handle to keep the fuel flowing (not the fastest setting). I fill till it clicks off, let it settle a while, fill slow till it clicks again and then round to the nearest 10 cents.
|
I stop after the 1st click followed by a 90 degrees rotation of the nozzle to the left and right.

My tank filler is vertical. I've removed the tank expansion vent (my tank is vented as its a diesel), so I fill the tank until the level is three inches from the top.

Otherwise, no.. :D |
...as James Bond would say: "...shaken, not stirred..!"

first click, usually same pump, handle vertical and fully inserted.

I fill it till it clicks, then manually fill it till i can see the fuel, Their is a line in my tank and i go by that,
my car doesnt have none of that safety cr#p in it, just piping to the tank and thats it, And thats how it should be |
On the nozzle I use the 2nd indent for medium speed filling, when I get close to full I go to the slow speed. After first click I manually squeeze handle slow speed untill second click. (Never tried the twisting instead of the shaking, I'll have to experiment). I miss the old pumps where you could turn the pump off (lever down) and then move the hose around with the handle squizzed to get all the fuel out of the hose.

i did do a search for (how to fill) came up many many pages went through them well 9 of them and didnt see what i was looking for.
i have on occassion pulled up with the filler door away from the pump and then ran the hose over the back of the car not touching it of course. but only if im in a hurry and there is a opening |
I shove the nozzle into the filler tube to the same depth, then stop at the first auto shut-off.
It seems to be pretty consistent. What error there is, will even out anyway. |
These days I don't. The El Cheapo stations I pass have the lowest price for cash, so I stick a $20 bill in the reader. That's something over half a tank, and generally lasts 3 weeks to a month. (Honda Insight, 70+ mpg :-))
But in the days when I did, I'd just stick the nozzle in on the lowest notch, leave it while I washed the windows, and let it click off. |

There is a collar on the inside of the filler tube to George's tank which stops people putting in the larger Diesel pump end in, er, so to tap. I fill it until the fuel is at the bottom of this collar which is consistent and leaves a couple of inches for expansion. Spills kill bikers, and all that. |

Of course there is the "buy your petrol on a cool day because its more dense" debate ?
|
I purchase fuel at the same pump most every time. I fill it and let it click off 3 times. I don't see how you can look down the tube to see how much is in there.
|
i have also heard about the filling when the temp is lower but im not sure if there is anything to it. would be interesting to find out.

I try to fill up at the same pump every time. Its a pay@pump, so i dont have to take off helmet or anything (Im a Biker). Bike on side stand, fill until at bottom of tank filler neck pipe thing, then pump up to the nearest 10p/£1.. pretty consistent £13.. Oh, and im a shaker, gottta get every last drop. Anyone else noticed that sometimes the fuel starts flowing a second before the number start counting?.. couple of ml free fuel? |
