How long can gasoline last in a tank
 

I have heard mixed results from one month to one year, the volt will burn off its fuel tank after 1 year automatically, to reduce corrosion and particle build up. Will the grade of gas affect its longevity.

I'm using regular and I'm 4 days away from my fuel sitting for a month

My Jeep goes 6+ months (still has fuel from October in it!) between refuels and has never caused a problem. Some Eco cars will easily go 1000km on a tank which for many would be a whole month's driving (if not longer).

But look forward to differing opinions.

Mustang uses month old E0 fairly often now that I have a second vehicle. Haven't seen any issues so far.

The sealed vapor recovery systems in modern cars can keep gas "fresh" for a long time as long as they remain sealed. My VX sat for 15 years and started and ran fine on E0 gas. I did immediately refill the tank. Modern E10 gas will not last anywhere near that long and I would agree with the Volt using up fuel that has been in the tank a year.

It's a different story with unsealed containers, much shorter time period.

The most experience i have with fuel age is in lawn mowers, people will say not to let the gas sit all winter or it won't start. That's garbage. If you fill a push mower with gas that was purchased in April then leave it all winter and try to start it next April, yeah you will probably have issues. But if you only buy a gallon or two at a time then the gas you buy in September will be just fine in April.

Long story short, my opinion is that 1 year is the maximum. But with a good detergent added you can still use it.

7 year old gas in my Firefly when I got it. Ran fine.

My Swift GT parts car has 5-7 year old gas in it now, and always starts right up.

However: 1 year old gas in my old 2-stroke boat engine is iffy.

I had a similar experience to Frank.
I had a '59 Austin Cambridge that sat in a garage for over 25 years, it also fired right up.

My camaro satfor 3 years, fired right up after I put a battery in it.
It did run better after I topped it off with fresh gas.

Old leaded gas would last even longer, but vapor recovery systems were not sealed back then.

I drain gas after 3 months and put it in the wifes car.
