Aerodynamic Trike Idea

Seeing this picture from a magazine got me thinking about an aerodynamic version of this. put on a full fairing and reshape the cargo area to be more aerodynamic.

I have seen many bicycles with full fairings before but this has advantages those don't. Bicycles with full fairings are not very practical for much other then racing. The cargo area is great for caring more then you could with a normal bike and yes I know you can get a bike trailer. The fact that it is a trike also makes it easier to carry more weight.
You could easily make it into an electric bike with all the room for batteries and other components in the cargo area.

You see lots of "cargo bikes" like this in the USA.



What I was thinking would be to take a "cargo bike" and add a fairing something like these have.




We all know why aerodynamics is a good thing.

The other added bonus is because of the cargo box it would be easy to add a canopy for year round riding.

I've thought a lot about a fairing for my recumbent tadpole, but can't resolve the added length & width, it'd be over nine feel long should I make it a full velomobile.

While a cargo delta like in the first pic wouldn't have that issue - have you seen the 'Windwrap' fairings by Terracycle?

Add a fairing to the front of the first cargo bike frame and taper the box front and back to shoulder width. An adult trike with a front wheel larger than the rear wheels would work well also with a cargo box.

They are really nice aren't they. I've looked them up on his site and really like them a lot, they're outside my budget though as are many others I've been seeing that I like. I am resigned to making my own now to be ready for his June high mileage challenge in the northwest! :{)

I would love to make velomobile myself, but currently don't have funds.

However for fairing I would consider WWI route, aeroplanes, they were made from relative light wooden fixture and fabric. Today you can get really light fabrics that hold wind really well, parachutes, all kind of gliders are made these days from such, it would need only light structure when pulled tight over that structure.

I have not looked price of such materials yet as I have been just playing around with thought, but for me that would be something tha would add least amoung of weight and it would be relatively easy to build too, also one might be able to make mechanism to open and close to get easy entry to vehicle too.

I use hex mesh with plastic tarp material bonded to both sides and nylon tubing for ribs.
